Sounds more like top end or something loose to me.

Pull the valve covers off and look for anything obvious.

I pulled the cam covers and poked around, couldn't find anything obviously wrong.

Check accessories and pulleys.

Pulled the cams out fearing something awful like some valve keepers had let go.

Turns out whoever put this head together forgot a shim. I couldn't find it anywhere in the head. Nothing appeared to be damaged or scored, so I pulled a shim out of the old cyl head I have in storage and threw it in.

Runs smooth and quiet now.

Did you measure the clearance or just toss it in and go.
