So I can take a plate number to the dmv and get an address??? I had a hit and run on my old car where we got the plate number but the cops wouldn't do anything, so I couldn't do a single thing with the plate number I had. Maybe things have changed?

You really cant do much with number plates.

Which is another reason i'm not scared to post my vin number online.

Its only eched on every one of my windows and is easily obtainable.

Another point is here the Cops monitor forums and there was a recent case of a guy getting a defect and being told he could drive it home, he ignored this then a few days later bragged online the cop read it and nailed him
