Really Annoying Fan...

Okay, i'm now officially annoyed with my heater blower. Ever since i've owned it, the A/C and heating has worked fine bar one thing. You have to move at 70+ with the controls set for external air intake to get anything out of it!

I've fitted a new resistor pack and i'm waiting on a replacement climate control unit from a USDM '88, with all the pushbuttons and digital control, rather than the digilogue thing we got here (pushbuttons and slidey VR's to control temp).

How likely is it that the blower motor itself has failed? Also, the passenger side kick panel has a large breaker on it - problem is, its got no markings on it and Currie Motors, my local stealership, can't identify what current rating it is. I'm pretty sure from looking at the Cygnus X1 diagrams that its a 30 or 40amp type, but anyone know? It's plastic and oval, with a metal 'can lid' on top.

Resistor pack had the really thin wire resistor packed up and burned out, but the other two are fine.

Anyone with any ideas, cheers and TIA :)

The blower motor is more likely than the control unit. It is an easy check. You can even use a test light. Un plug the connector, it is a three wire under the dash on the right side.

As you change fan speed, the light will get brighter/dimmer.

I have read threads about the control unit stuck on low though. So it isn't out of the question.

you're probably the first person across the pond to fit a USDM climate control in place of your sliders. good luck! :)

If doesn't light up, use a DVOM- digit volt ohm meter, aka multimeter on the control unit. Make sure the resitor has power also. A weak electric motor or corroded wiring will make it spin slow, if not at all.

i highly doubt it's plug and play. your temp control is worked by sliders. you don't have the servo's to move the temperature control flapper inside the ducting. or several of the other servos for that matter.

For the heater, don't you need a completely different heater valve if you have a digital temp control? It's the one mounted on the firewall engine side Passenger side? Or does the slide control use this same valve?

Er, i *do* have servo's. The sliders are only variable resistors and switches, they're not cable operated at all. The airducting is all pushbutton based, as is the a/c and the like, the only thing thats sliders, is the slidey switch that determines fan speed, and the slider that selects the temperature from 19*c up in increments of 1*c. When you move the temp slider, you can hear a servo motor :)

The rear of the unit only has electrical plug connections, so i'm assuming it'll just swap over. Judging by the wiring diagrams, it's almost universal. The only exception, is the GA70 unit, which didnt have 'per-degree' temp control, and was just a 'blue to red' slider, that used a different resistor pack. The unit should be here in a few days (ordered it in July and stupidly selected USPS as the shipping option) so i'll do a rundown on it :)

woo, talk about thread revival!

I now have the climate control unit in my posession - just wondering if anyone has swapped over the slidey things to the digital controls at all...i'mma going to ask on the UK forums later tomorrow. JDM cars with automatic climate control also have the slidey things, if that helps any :p
