Hi SM! Since I've owned my car somewhere in the back passenger side of the car there has been a rattle and it rattles on every single little pebble and bump on the road. At 1st I though it might be the shock loose or something, so I crawled back there with a wrench one day and not one nut was loose; yet the rattle continues.

So my question is, how likely is it the hatch thats making all the noise, and could there have been something else in that area with the suspension making the noise? I mean, it doesn't handle or ride funny in any way that I'm aware of, so I'm assuming its the hatch, but then how would I go about fixing that?

this sounds like a loose strut on the strut cap, or possibly worn out strut cap. I had the same problem (not tight enough) on my brand new KYB strut tops, tightened them more, and broke a brand new KYB strut top trying to apply 30 ft lbs of torque...

Thanks! I didn't think about the bump stops.

I feel kind of stupid not checking sogi for something like this myself...

The seats were in, and it rattled, then I took them out, and it rattles exactly the same.

I'll double check the strut too, the problem is that I didn't install the struts myself. So I have no idea what/how it was done and if anything went wrong.

I just changed my two hatch stops and now the rattle in the back is gone. Each stop is held in place with two phillips head screws. When ordering new stops get the screws also as they were hard to get out because Toyota uses thread lock on the screws. I put new thread lock on the screws and put the new stops on. Except for the screw removal it is an easy job.

Yea, I saw the screw thing in the sogi writeup.

So, I just went down to the garage and popped the hatch to see what you guys were talking about; and obviously it took like a split second to see them... anyway, when I closed the hatch I put my hands under the wing and quickly pushed down hard on it and I was able to mimick the rattle (all be it much quieter) so i think that could be it.

I think I'll put my order in to get them and see if it helps. Thanks for everyone's input. I'm still hoping at this point that its not the strut.

Just went out to check it and it seems quite secure from giggling/pulling/pushing on it. It sounds like the noise is coming from the latch when it springs back up after I push down on it (indicating to me the stops are bad.)

I took out the antenna assembly a while back. To my surprise it was a COMPLETE hack job install, but it wasn't the rattle.

The rubber pieces are universal for all the years... The plastic things on the hatch are like 4 bucks each or something for pre-89 or post-89

part number 67293-14030 Rubber cushions are $9.97/each and the screws for those cushions are part #90159-50116 $0.45/ea. I purchased the above from Champion Toyota (Jeff Watson).

mmk, well just to add this, there was not even a trace of loc-tite being on those screws and the threads are in great condition.

Anyone got a tip on getting those screws undone?

I've tried everything now and they are definately locked in there good.

It seems like there's a nut on the back, inside the fender -- am I meant to hold that whilst trying to undo the screw?

Change the stops, it will fix the rattle, i changed mine, they were way sagged and the stops on the hatch are of a hard material, the stops on the body are hard rubber, the rubber sags and causes the rattle. Well worth the time and money. As for getting the screws out, make sure you have a GOOD #2 philips tip screwdriver or you will be pissing into the wind, bear down on the screw heads with as much pressure as you can and go slowly, they will come out.

I replaced the stops, it didn't work. The right rear shock was hardly tight; I torqued it down and now all is fine.
