Hey, I just dropped a GTE in my NA chassis. 90 NA chassis, late 89 block and harness.

All ECU connections are plugged in, but two connectors near the ECU do not match up and are not connected.

CEL light does not come on at any time, but I can hear the fuel pump whirring when the key is on start.

Car does not crank or anything, all interior electrics work just fine. CC unit, clock, gauges, all work.

Any ideas?

No cel at any time usually means no power to the ECU.
The connectors left hanging in the ECU area, need to be swapped to the proper connector and connected.

There has been threads over the years regarding the 89 harness when swapped to different years. I don't remember all the details, but they are not direct fit. As you already know. Make sure the 7.5 gauge fuse is also proper. When you look for why the ECU isn't getting power.

The 89 is like that plugged toilet that we all have from time to time....

With plunger in hand, we look down at it and wonder...why didn't I wait until I got to Walmart to take a dump!?

Update, I got power to the B+ pinout on the ecu, it seems to be getting power. My voltmeter is on the fritz, so I think it was just being weird last night. That, and I'd been in the garage for literally 18 hours with only one meal break.

Nick: I'll check the 7.5 fuse once I get home tomorrow. I think I need to figure out the other connectors that are currently not connected. They must be the missing link between the chassis and the ECU.

What are the other plugs in the ECU area for? How on earth do I go about matching the pins? I can rewire the terminals, that's cake, but most the wires are different colors and the connectors dont even look similar...?

Do I need to go to toyota and buy an 89 TEWD? What non-ECU plugs would have any wires that would prevent the CEL from coming on?

Thanks for any help guys, I appreciate it!! :)

Fwiw the online EWD is for an 89...

Wow, I was sure it was for '90. Ok well that solves that issue.

UPDATE: So I got the connectors all figured out by the ECU, everything is plugged in and everything matches.

BUT.... Now I still have a starting problem. It wont crank. No voltage gets to the starter to click it on. None at all. I tried grounding the alarm while starting, no luck. I checked voltages at the ECU and VS is incorrect while cranking and the starter signal is still zero. ARGH!!!

How could the starter signal be getting lost between the relay and the ECU?! I can hear and feel the relay click and all other voltages at the ECU show the ECU knows when ign is on.

FIXED!!!

It was the damn B1 plug. The car's harness end had one less pin and I needed to switch the engine harness pins. The clutch switch signal was what was holding it back. I have my switch jumpered, but the problem was in the order of the pins.

What is odd is that the engine side of the harness has a black and white wire which was plugged into the black and white wire of the clutch switch, but apparently.... that is wrong. It should go from black and white into black and blue... Of course. Because that makes perfect sense.... :sarcasm:

Anyways, THANKS TO ALL SUGGESTIONS!

I'll have to go through the wiring harness and sort out a bunch of oddities. The oil pressure sender wire was cut and a water sensor wire was used instead, but the someone used a section of the correct wire near the sender so I couldn't tell it was actually the wrong wire.... ugh.

To anyone who's considering buying a new harness from toyota I vote in favor of shelling out the cash for a harness that isn't hacked to all hell...
