all i can think about is the amount of wear the wheeled carriages are going to have on wall of the oval, piston engine, same cylinder wall hits same cylinder wall, with this, 8 different ones each sized and measured independantly going over same surface+ any carbon deposits left from combustion. the friction surface on the wall is the same surface that has to take the grunt of the combustion, and compression,

overall it is far more simple but it looks like it would wear out faster.

Considering just how venerable the technology in our conventional engines is, I wouldn't be surprised to see some sort of new engine take over. And as for wear - piston engines seem to be designed to wear out right from the get go. There's more parasitic drag in a piston engine than just about anything I've ever seen, and they still work for a good long time, so...

That is a very good point, such as the pistons on the cylinder walls.

When I read about the wheeled carriages i couldnt help from thinking about a steel roller coaster. Seems to me like the materials would wear down too, but maybe they will invent some sort of special material that can resist mass friction.

Even if a new engine would come along, there still will be the good ol' piston engine...

One word - ceramics

You'd be amazed how strong & wear resistant ceramic components can be.
