Progressive Power Steering or Alternative? - need to replace rack

So I have found quite the leaking passenger boot on the steering rack, while I have been removing things during my manual tranny swap.

I am prepared to purchase a rebuilt steering rack, I just need to know what is the difference between Progressive Power Steering and (non progressive)? What is the alternative to PPS? Folk at AutoZone and other places are clueless and just click away on their inventory computers. I need to be prepared.

How can I identify what steering rack is in my car? Can i tell by a specific shape, ECU, sensor or harness?

I have a 1987 Auto Turbo Targa with TEMS. (if all that matters)

I just want to make sure I order and inspect the new rack to be certain that I have the correct rack. I dont want to make this job longer than it will be.

progressive power steering (pps) came out in 89 so no, your car does not have pps. you can purchase the normal non pps rock.

:sarcasm: no he doesnt. jk i was pretty sure pps was 89+ but maybe not. he can ckeck to see if it is pps by looking for a wire coming off the rack anyway to be sure.

Well Looking at SR-61 and SR-76 it looks like the PPS rack has a huge pressure control valve bolted to control valve housing that has a sensor.

any real world pics of one or the other?

Can't mistake the 2 the PPS rack has the big ass solenoid bolted to it with 2 wires.

Awesome-O, I am determined to restore this 87 to like new condition! no matter what grease pit i have to overcome under this chassis!

You can buy rebuild kits from Toyota, just make sure the bore of the rack tube doesn't have too much wear at the centre position as the tube is $1k on it's own....

The bearings for a PPS rack are available off the shelf the ones for the non PPS aren't as they were "Toyota Specials"

its got its own little computer box by the ecu i think ?

vacuum. higher speeds there is no power assist. maybe i wrong tho.

thanks jdub. so.... i should not have any trouble with my 5spd swap? thought it was active with the ect-pwr settings. guess i should stop guessing myself!

The type tranny does not affect PPS.
