Machine shop phoned me today engine is all apart all the clearnce where checked and I got the total price for the work that needs to be done. number 6 on the crank clearence was off so it will need a re ground as well as the pistons are in a bit of rought shape SO i will replace them as well.
Pricing as is as followed
$995 for rebuild kit
Includes full gasket kit, bearings, thrust whasher, new oil pump, water pump, Pistons and rings.
In total it comes to 2300 including tax for
disaembly and cleaning of the short block and checking tolerance as well as re asemble
cleaning of the head
re-ground on the crank
shot peened rods

There might be some other thing i may have not included or missed on the phone but I will go back there tommrow To find out the exact details and check out the engine

This is my first engine rebuild And I just wondering if these prices sound fair to anyone?

Not that I know of???? I think he gave me a rough estimate before?? but i just got this call today with the set in stone pricing.

And IJ Im just going with a stock HG with ARP headbolts(I have done my fair share of reasarch and am not aming for any huge numbers so stock one will work fine)

As for crack testing?? details on that???

Stock gasket will be fine as long as you remember it's in there and NEVER get the urge to crank the boost up.

Just ask the shop to crack test the block it shouldn't cost much and might save some tears down the track.

All right Will do thnx for the advice

As for the stock gasket before the rod knock I had been running 12psi on the stock one with ARP and when it was removed showed no sign of damage.

if you're in there, you might as well rebuild the head (it consists of a lot of moving parts and wear items), and get it ready for a MHG.

MHG isn't about taking boost pressure in my experience, but making the engine as stout as possible from blowing the HG from detonation (detonation could happen at stock boost under the right conditions...).

IJ speaks the truth! get the block hattanksed and magnafluxed for cracks BEFORE any other work. If it has a nasty crack somewhere, it's pointless to pay for all the work!!!

if the shop already has your engine I would defiantely have them deck the block and head and put in a metal head gasket. The extra cost is miniscule for the added protection.

Even if you already bought a stock hg, just return it, or sell it.

the head is brand new and only has 15,000km on it I don't think it is going to need a rebuild as for the mhg well we will c about it.... though I think A stock one will be fine.

rod knock = destroyed bearings through the engine

pull the cam caps and inspect em as they get hurt pretty bad by the metal running through the oil...

He's right. I had maybe 2000 miles on a rebuild with the head done when I had a rod bearing go, had to get another head due to the cam journals being so gouged up. If you have to go that far I'd get the metal HG, just a little extra insurance over the stock HG.
