Power Steering Question plz help

ok so i have looked around and asked some questions on it on supraforums but no one really answered what i wanted so i decided to come here.
both the boots are riped and have been for a while...power steering fluid leaks from them.

I want to know if those boots are riped should it leak from there?
Is it the Seals that are bad now and thats why it leaks?
Can i just replace those boot things or whatever the whole thing is on both sides?
Will i have to take the whole Rack and Pinion out and get it rebuilt or get a new one because of this instead of replacing both those?

Hi Jonathan-
The boots are there to protect the seals. If dirt get in, the seals and the piston rod type thing will get damaged and start to leak.

You can replace the boots if the rack is not leaking, sounds like your is.

Time to replace the rack.

ok so everyone i have an 87 turbo.
i also have a 90 non turbo parts car...
could i just swap out the rack? should be simple with my turbo one since my motor is out...but the other one i think will be difficult.

This is a LONG SHOT but its worth a try for $7.00. LUCAS makes a fluid that you add to the power steering fluid that is suposed to fix minor leaks. It has worked on my fathers supra He had a small leak and it stoped after 2 bottles of the LUCAS stuff. Its at all major auto parts stores. Its worth the $7.00 per bottle to try. Still fix the boots..

Agree 100%. And using some liquid to fix the leak is a bad idea. I wouldn't risk damaging the PS pump or clogging the lines by using that liquid you mentioned. Get a new PS rack in there, use fresh AT fluid in there, properly bleed the system, and be done with it. You may want to replace the high pressure PS lines (abt $50 at PepBoys) while you're at it. Good luck.

I should have started with "try at your own risk" I cant say that it wont cause another problem I can only say that it worked for his problem..

well i replaced the high pressure hard line a long time ago. so anyone know anything if i can use the one from the 90 NA

or you chould just drain the rack and loop the lines then you have manule streeing witch i find better any ways

interesting....i might just do that eventually..i dont really wanna mess with a bunch of bullshit trouble with the powersteering. its pissing me off cuz its leaking so much and it gets all over Everything! and since im getting a new motor and im cleaning everything up i hate it when my engine bay is dirty. i clean everything as much as i can everytime i pop my hood. i just want my car to be good now since im getting a motor and everything.

Does anyone know which lines to loop and if i would have to block anything off and buy and use some other hose. im sure i would be able to just hook everything back up to normal if i didnt like it right?

if its leaking that bad a fluid addative wont help. You can mess around for a while but in the end you are gonna need to replace the rack. The one from the 90 might work. As I understand there are 3 different racks used through the years. As for interchangability...I cant help, but I would wager a guess and say it will work.
