Power Steering Pump Question

Sorry for the lame question but I have searched on the forums and I have looked in the TRSM and it appears that there isn't any difference between the power steering pumps with or w/o the PPS. I have an 89 non turbo and 90 turbo but the turbo car had an engine exchange that was done before I got the car so I don't know if the pump is correct or not. The pumps on the two cars look the same but I have not pulled them both so I can't see a whole lot of detail. In searching for a new pump the parts stores ask if it is pps or not and they say there are tow different parts depending on whether it pps or not.

My question is: Are the PPS and the non PPS pumps the same? If not, deos anyone know where I can get a PPS pump without spending the 400+ that Toyota wants {and they show none in the states)?

Thank you for the help,
Brian

Brian: You need to correct pully to suit which rack you run.

PPS Rack needs the small pully to overdrive the pump at slower engine speeds then they bleed pressure at high speed.

Not sure what's going to happen with the large non PPS pully as it's going to have less pressure at low speeds and at high speeds when PPS does it's thing?

(this is all probably just confusing the issue as I believe the pumps are the same and it's just the pully that's different but I'd ask Jeff Lange to check numbers to be sure)

Thanks IJ. I think the pulley is the correct one, it is smaller than some of the ones I have seen in the for sale section (but it also looks the same size as the one on my NA, non PPS so I don't know). I will wait and see if Jeff catches this thread, if not I will PM him.

Again, thanks for the input IJ.

Please don't be sorry, I just keep running outside to look. The pulley on the turbo car (the one in question) is 135mm. So I should be okay on that, this car was a zoo when I bought it and I think I will forever find things this knuckle head that owned the car before me did that make my head hurt. However, it appears he did keep the correct pulley on the car.

Now, about that pump.....:naughty:

Thanks again,
Brian

Yeah, I just mine would quit moaning/whining and would allow me to turn the wheel when not in motion. With the pulley question answered, now all I need to know is if there are two different pumps for the 90. Does it matter from PPS or not?

Thanks,
Brian

EPC pulls up 2 different part numbers for PPS or without...

Pulleys can be swapped, but I'm unsure of what could have changed in the pump.

The higher pressure of the PS fluid from the smaller pulley also acted like a dampener, replacing the dampener assembly on the old racks. Though I have a feeling it also contributes to early failure of the pump and lines from the excess pressure at high RPM. That's my deduction and opinion though...

So how's that switch work, and does it make the steering easier? Was thinking of doing the same for track use as the PPS makes the steering heavy at speed, but on a highspeed track that could be a hindrance...

Mr. Jeff Lange, if you see this post, do you know about the differences between the PPS and the non PPS pump? I don't want to go through a secondary source (non Toyota) and end up with the wrong pump and ruin soemthing else in the system.

Thank you,
Brian
