there is a hard line connecting the inlet of the canister
that hard line goes in front of the engine bay

is it important
does it serve a purpose?

Do you mean the vacuum line that goes to your PS pump?
It's going from the pump to the other side of the engine. there is a VSV for it.

It is used as 'idle up':

1) Makes it easier to turn the car at idle RPM.
2) Makes the engine rev a little higher and prevent it from stalling when consuming the extra power for the PS pump to work when the car is idle.

Ummm...it's a loop in the air flow coming in from the front of the car.

If you like your PS pump, you'll leave it there hooked up like it's suppose to be.
