I had two of the stock near-full size temporary spares lying around (one from my car, one from my old parts car) and I really wanted to use the wheels for other tires. But it would have been a shame to let two full-tread tires go to waste. Plus they were like 18 years old -- they were so hard I thought they might last 1/2 the day in the wet. So this parking-lot event was the perfect venue to put them to rest. After running a few laps, it became apparent that they just plain sucked, so I headed over to the skidpad and proceeded to do about 30 large circles until they blew:

When changing tires, I usually leave the car in neutral (idling down) and the ebrake off (heard horror stories of people putting the ebrake on with hot brakes and having it freeze). Now normally loosening lugnuts isn't a problem if one of the rear tires is still on the ground. However upon trying to loosen the driver's rear lugnuts, I found the wheel was spinning in the air -- despite the right-rear being on the ground. That was the first sign my LSD had about had the weenie. This was the 2nd:

On right-hand turns, the car now acts like it has an open diff and understeers:

Left hand turns are perfectly OK... (And yes, the license plate lost a bolt. Stockton has a "slightly bumpy" section)

This was a long straight (for a parking lot event) before a fast sweeper.

MK3's don't need as much room as AE86's to get up to speed, so I found myself sliding into the corner farther and farther from the grip entry point:

This is the same corner, just a little later in the slide. It doesn't look like it, but the car is actually in sort of a stall -- all four wheels are sliding with the passenger-side of the car actually the "front."

The first time I completed this turn, I got back to the grid and my hands were shaking. 70mph looking 100% out your passenger window is exhilerating.

Anyway, I had a blast until my turbo started smoking at idle in the grid (I knew it was on its way out going into the event, just hoped it would last for a few more). Happy with my current power at 8psi, I'll probably just have my spare ct26 rebuilt without upgrading in the hopes it'll hold together.

^that guy was extremely talented. It's a very hard car to drift (I've got a 91NA) and he made it look so easy.

One of the better drivers hamming it up for the camera:

This guy is really cool and helpful. He also welds open diff's on the side (with a lifetime gaurantee!) for $75 a pop. Look for him at Formula D events

Sorry for using 4 posts, but apparently there is a limit to the # of images per post?

thats pimp are you coming to the drift by the bay one, in golden gate fields, 125 dollares or so?

Unfortunately not. I just got a job with Horsepowerfreaks in Portland, so I'll be heading up there this weekend. Norcal is starting to get a ton of events now though -- at least 2 a month during the summer/fall. Luckily, the drift scene seems to be blossoming up there as well.

How did that 944 do? I always thought a 944 would make a good drift car. (my reasoning being the weight distrubution, with the transaxle in the rear) anyways nice pics! sucks about the your turbo. ever thought about a 57 trim? that would give you a little more power and make sliding that supra around a little easier. I don't know much about drifting but that would seem to help. Jake

The 944 did pretty fair. Looked to me like he was a road racing/autocross convert with good car handling skills.

I've currently got a 60-1 ct26, but it only lasted ~20,000 miles. I'm happy with the car's power (well until I go to the drag races ;) ) so I don't see the need for a bigger turbo down the road especially since I am not taking full advantage of this one...

ahh I didn't know you had a 60-1. ;) Thats cool about the 944 tho. Depending on the driver, does the car itself show characteristics of a good drift car?

Sure does, aside from the practical standpoint of being slightly more costly to own/maintain. He had some power, good balance, rwd, and a lsd -- pretty much all you need.

yea i've been throwing around the idea of getting an NA one just for an extra car for when the supras down. Just something fun to drive that I could get sideways in every now and then. Honestly I dont like drifting the Supra cause its so heavy and I dont have alot of driving experience that when I do get it sideways it feels like its harder to get back under control. But i guess its just practice.

No other Supras came? I'm over in Stockton. Unfortunately, I don't have the tires to drift, heh. Right now I'm actually using the spare on my driver's rear.

why didnt one of you bishes tell me!!! i go to school at UOP right in stockton!!

Heh two reasons:

1) Didn't know anyone other that "jdm king" was interested in drifting in norcal
2) It was a private, invite-only test event with no spectators allowed. The point was to get a feel for putting on a parkinglot course (private-events.net had only done track events like buttonwillow before) so that the monthly open events would go much more smoothly than the SCCA stockton event.

If you're interested in attending later events at the fairgrounds (driver or spectator) go to http://www.private-events.net/ The first one is may 1st...

If you want to autocross, SCCA is putting on an event this saturday. www.sfrscca.org -- click on "Solo 2," then "sacramento chapter"
