I used multi-purpose grease. I put the shifter socket, and the end cap in my '94 4x4. The difference is incredible. 150k on the old bushings didn't fare so well. :(

And I'm pretty sure that they made a newer version that fits easier... but I could be wrong.

Lithium or Teflon grease should work. Or, a PTFE based grease like Loctite Superlube.

i wish i woulda known this like an hour ago. I guess its my bad tho for not asking more before i left.

gotta wait till tomorrow!

when you say should work does that mean i should be worried if i use lithuim grease?

shaff you used multi purpose how long ago did you use it and have you had any problems?

i may ask alot of retarded questions but i dont wanna mess somethin up because a $5 thing of grease was the wrong kind.

Petro grease can react with polyurethane causing hardening over time...but, folks use it with no problems too.
The greases I listed are not petro greases.

Supaman- I used it because someone apparently used all of my good grease. (my dad and brother are the only two who use the garage besides me)

I planned on taking mine back out and lubing it up with some good grease, but haven't gotten around to it yet. So far, no issues. It's been about a year. I had the shifter out about a week ago, simply to inspect it, as it felt as if it were hanging up. Everything was still fine as of then.

This week, I'll likely pull it again and just do it right...

Don't get caught up in names too much...any lithium grease will work fine. Silicone grease will too...you might find it in the plumbing section at the hardware store ;)

You're wear the seat out faster.

Couple notes about installing the bushings (or installing the shifter in general)

-Do NOT force the socket into the tranny, if it's not straight it won't go in. It's a very tight tolerance so it has to make a straight shot.

-Be careful not to rip the boots as they keep the smell out of the cabin.

-Either replace the gasket, or use sealer on the top plate so you don't have a leak down the side of your tranny.

I myself used moly grease as I had it around, and the gear oil DOES get up into that part of the tranny and didn't want any reactions from using an odd grease.
