Okay I have a totally noob question :3d_frown:. Is there a way to see what has been done to an engine such as head gasket composition etc. without ripping it apart? The only reason I ask is the engine donor I got has a little under 100k on it and ran strong from what I was told from my father –in –law who test drove it before it was pulled. However, several things on the engine were definitely replaced such as some of the hoses, vacuum hoses, and timing belt. I am curious to see if it has a metal head gasket or the condition the head gasket is in (original vs. OEM redo) but don’t want to rip into a decent running engine for no reason.

You should be able to see the edge of a metal headgasket coming out from between the block and head. Other than that, good luck.

My advice to you, is to freshen up the engine now while its pulled. even if it runs nice. Wouldnt you feel better to have the confort of know that you replaced the headgasket yourself than get it in the car all bolted up and drive 1000 miles and fuck your motor up because you didnt wanna crack it open? thats just what i would do. you already have one bad motor:) damnit. radiod beat me too it.

ie- throw it on an engine stand and put some new bearings in it too.

Actually i don't have a bad motor. The engine was sourced differently as the car was bought without an engine and it has already been droped into the car. However, I appreciate what you said and was thinking of pulling the head and redoing the gasket anyway just to see what is what and perhaps doing some ARP bolts or studs while at it.

I would definitely do that. I bought a rebuilt engine and I wish I had pulled the head and put a metal headgasket on with ARP bolts while it was out. I just didn't have the knowledge then that I have now.

edit: I just noticed that you said the engine has already been dropped in.

might as well take it to a machine shop too to make sure the surface is flat for a MHG. no flat= no good for MHG

ARPs are a must. pop off that head and check. and get some acl race bearings while your at it. clean the engine.
driving a supra is like dating a stripper, you gotta check inside...

Would need to machine both the block and head for mhg which basically means entire rebuild. Id run it till it blew and then rebuild it.

Ok, two things first Hedorah that was awesome, totally made my day. Secondly, hvyman that was what i was thinking or just doing a OEM gasket with ARP bolts and saving to do a complete rebuild in a year or two as most of the monies i have dedicated for this rebuild will be going to making it street worthy at stock power. Stuff like fixing leaks, sorting suspension, and redoing brakes. Is there any difference to doing a rebuild before or after a BHG in regards to price/work needed to complete?

yes!!! if you put this motor in and it does get a BHG then the rebuild is going to be 3 times expensive. you could pull it out now and remove the head buy some arp studs a oem HG and retourque and your done... if you get a BHG your going to need new bearings, possibly pistons, bored out, decked, the head done, etx about 1500$ plus in work compared to if you just put it on an engine stand youll need 100$ set of bearings and an oem HG.... with some studs.... somaybe 300$ to refresh this motor compapred to a 1500$+ rebuild.... you decide....
