what should i do if a car does have rod knock, should i just not even bother consider buying it? How much would it cost to fix it anyways?

:joshers: :joshers:

rodknock generally means a rebuild. there is at least one person on here who has fixed their knocking by simply replacing the faulty rod bearing. however if one bearing ran low on oil than odds are theres more that could start to knock and there may be damage to the crank that would prevent you from just replacing the bearing. bottome line, if it knocks, id keep looking.

other than that give jdubs links a good read(as in memorize), get a good bud of yours who knows cars to come along and help. and try not to get too caught up in the moment. dont feel like this is your one chance at a supra, there will be others. so be prepared to walk away if you find something wrong.

depends on people around you..
i had rod knock luckily for me i replaced the brearing and it went away becasue it wasnnt that bad of a knock.... if you dirve on it it can seize and lock your motor. i would buy a supra if it had rodknock and the price was right but that would only be if i planned on "modding it"

Wouldn't take less than 10k for mine, running or not, I love my supra. Their are strong 7mgte's out there and mk3's in good condition, keep looking and GL with the search. Their are some in the Northern kentucky area that I know of, probably get them for under $2500.

Absolutely. Do not rush into the purchase of a MK3. They are easy to be blinded by their beauty without letting you know a thing about their faults. Be cautions and take your time. These cars require a lot of attention and a lot of patience. If you can't have patience when buying one, you should quit while you're ahead! ;)

Good luck finding the right Supra, man. Enjoy the hunt!

I come from a land down under
"Supra's have such big doors so you can shovel the $$$ in"
(and when it's full you open the Hatch and shovel some more in)

Not trying to scare you off but Kurt makes a valid point, educate yourself before the purchase as our cars can be a Blackhole for cash!

How can you tell if a turbo is broken, are there any signs like smoke or noises? and if it is broken is it better to fix or just replace? THANKS just wondering if a car is worth the buy if the turbo is shoot

Yeah, like souprat said, don't get caught up in the moment and pick up one that may not be the best deal! I just bought my first Supra two weeks ago and pretty much did just that. It was sort of rough but driveable. Well, it's real rough, it's been used and abused badly. But it was $700 so why not?! If I looked a little more I would've found this other one I'm going to buy now, a much cleaner and nicer na 87 that's been sitting due to blown head gasket. If you're not a good wrench spend more on a nicer car to start with. Otherwise, wanna buy a '86.5 na 5spd?

check the trunk for leaks and rust in the spare tire and also underneath in the rear...

if it were me i would avoid one that is modded... to me if its modded then most likely it was beaten harder and people may have cutten corners when doing the mod...

big thing is on decide if you like the pre 89 or 89+ they have slight changes between the models... i would get one that is mint though try not to get one with tons wrong with it because more than likely there will be even more wrong and that all adds up

Good Luck with the hunt, love seeing more Mk3 Lovers out there maybe someday we will get our own movie! Or a whole magazine or book made up...

that reminds me for a book idea... any good writers out there? you should make a book on fixing a hg instead of having to go looking in tons of posts and then printing everything out

HAHA totally they should make a book on mkiiis and not just how to fix the head gasket but how to rebuild the 7mgte engine entirely, i would totally buy that. I think i would really like a 89+ right now, but if i can find a good deal on a 87 or 88 turbo in good condition i wouldn't mind buying one of those either.

Oh yeah, back to my question how do you tell if a turbo is broken and how long does a turbo usually last?
