Well we're changing our transmission on this 87 na, from auto to 5 speed(w58)

We don't have a fly wheel, anyone have thoughts on a good, possibly lightened, flywheel?

Also, when we got the transmission, nothing looked wrong with it. Is there anything we need to do just to make sure everything is in the green? also noticed on the bracket towards the rear that supports the transmission, there is a L shaped bar that sticks out...the auto tranny that was in it did not have one of these...

I wouldnt waste $300 on a flywheel but thats just me.... I think the heavy flywheel is one of the things that should stay the way it is.

well how much does a stock one cost? and we're trying for weight reduction...Plus we don't have a flywheel in the first place:]...i thought about fidanza but i know nothing about em.

Also, what about a clutch kit?

ok since you dont have a stock one you should be able to get one for CHEAP. Most people just throw them out because they arent a real high-value item.

For a 7MGE you should just go with a stock W58 clutch. www.rockauto.com is a good place to get one or you can get an oem spec one from ebay.

Dont bother with a "high power" clutch for your car. You dont need it and it can actually harm your engine.

The problem with a lightweight flywheel is that it removes some of the dampening effect on the engine. In some aspects its kind of like going with a lightweight underdrive pulley. Actually, Carbonetic offers an option where you can add weight to their aftermarket clutch plates to make them run more smoothly on your engine.

Light isnt always better for everything.

well of course but you're looking at a 800 car....which i know lightening wouldn't be always good, at least on the engine;]...but i was just curious. We're not making the fastest car in the world just a quick fun toy:]

If you want to make a quick fun toy then I would recommend raising the c/r by shaving the head. Do some math first for the C/R, but chances are that your car may be on its way to BHG anyway.... Spend the 300 shaving the head and getting a MHG and some ARP bolts or studs. Set the c/r to 10.5 or even 11:1. Get some lighter wheels.

Just my opinion, but I dont think you will get that much satisfaction out of a lightweight flywheel. Some things should be kept OEM-like and it has been my experience that that is one of them.

well actually this car was reign_makers first car. He rebuilt it and it started leaking on the head gasket because of torque specs from factory. we bought it and have put it back together with new head gasket, seals, arp.

The block and head have been milled down, before we had it.

Check my sig,

87 auto GE to GTe manual

except for now we're putting in a w58 and keeping the na motor.

So the block and head were milled but im guessing that they werent really cut down too far... The most cost-effective way to make more power with that motor will be to raise the c/r significantly.

Or maybe you could just go na-t.... Throw a stock ct-26 on there and leave the C/R where its at. That would make a really fun street car. With a NA LSD diff you could give a lot of cars a run for their money at the track. That really wouldnt be too pricey. Did you see the china divorced downpipe on ebay? Things are getting cheap nowdays.

it looked milled down a pretty good bit. i know it's the max you can go on the block...lol...the piston is almost smooth with the top, with a small gap....well i guess it went from non interference to interference:]
