I have been driving with no power steering for quite some time now. In some ways driving w/o power steering is better because I get a better feel for the road. It started a while back when I was leaking power steering fluid like crazy, it was leaking from the pump I believe, and probably from other places as well but I do not really know. I cut the belt and said to hell with it and recently I took the whole pump out of there to shed a few pounds.
Now my steering rack is acting up, or atleast I think it is the steering rack. My wheel feels very jerky while driving, tightens up a little bit, then loosens a little etc.
Instead of replacing the rack with another power steering rack I would like to get a manual steering rack. If I got a power steering rack I would probably end up wanting another pump. I am used to driving with no power assist but it is a pain when turning out of parking spaces and more importantly I heard that it is damn near impossible to control the steering wheel if the car loses control.
I think a manual steering rack would be a good compromise as it would seem easy to steer compared to an unpowered power steering rack. What I need help with is finding a suitable manual steering rack. I heard that I can use one from a 5.0 mustang? I would also like to know of any special considerations that I should take into account before making the swap, any additional parts I will need to fit a mustang rack into the Supra, and any advice from anyone who has done this before.
