I got an Escort 8500 X-50. :naughty:

I just put it in the car and went to the store, and it seems like a real nice unit.I played with some of the display features at the store when i was leaving. I looked this thing up and its suppose to be "top rated' so only time will tell. My previous radar was bel 920 which was ok, it talked which was cool to new riders in my soop.

If nebody has one of these escorts please feel free to let me know how you feel about it.

Something to read, heres a nice review done by a retired cop:

Radar detectors are worthless now. With most cops using laser, when your detector tells you there is a laser cop ahead, that's when he has already clocked you. I drive to work on I85 in georgia everyday. My Escort hasn't helped me one bit. The gwinnett cops all use laser now, my detector doesn't even go off 99% of the time. When it does go off, I am probably a few hundred feet from the cop. 99% of the time, I see the cop before the radar even goes off.

Best radar detector, keep and eye on all the cars in fron tof you. When they see the cops, everyone ahead of you will be braking to slow down, that's when you slow down too......

Ouch thats hurts. Well fortunatly in my area, they dont run laser much, but they run the hell out of Ka spectrum. Thats what my main concern is with.

i have a bel rx-65 which is very similar. tubbie is right, in that detectors are useless in protecting against laser but that doesnt mean detectors are now useless alltogether. the key is knowing the limitations. in my case, i dont rely on the detector when im on the freeway cause i know the wa state patrol use laser. but the local cops in most the towns/cities i frequent, only use Ka band. and with the bel rx-65, i see the Ka long before the cop sees me.

one note: no detector is a substitute for good situational awareness. if a cop can sneek up behind you, then he doesnt even need to turn on his radar. he can ticket you based on pacing. also, some places will pace you with airplanes/helicopters.

yea that bel seems like a nice piece of equipment i read allabout it, very similar indeed.

I will agree awarness factor is better than any radar.

I have that detector and I love it! It has saved me from laser twice! What most people forget is that on the Escorts you can buy the Shifter ZR3 that WILL block laser. You install it in the front and back and connect it to the X50, it comes with remote radar modules as well so it increases the effectiveness even more.

BTW, the reason the Bel and the Escort are similar is because they are now the same company. However, the Bel will not work with the laser shifter. For peeps not in the know, Radar detectors are only illegal in Virginia and Washington DC, laser shifters have no laws against them technically. Radar jammers are illegal in almost every state.

I may have to look into, since i save money on this detector ill be able to use the money i originally had put back, and i cant invest it in a laser defence system. I do most of my driving @ nite so visibitlity is low, and i have slight tendency to speed on the interstate, but its not my fault the car feels good @ 80.

Thanks for the feedback.......

The Shifter ZR3 is not actually listed on the website http://www.escortradar.com, but you can buy it at an authorized dealer. It is basically the laser half of the Passport SR7 hidden remote mount system. The only drawback is the $399 retail price. I would hit up a friend at a shop and see if he will use his employee accomodation with Escort to get one. Someone at a Best Buy would work.

if cops use laser a lot where you live the only way is to use active laser jamer. they run around 300-500 and ofcourse are illeagal in most states, however the install externaly and are hard to detect.

now if cops use Ka where you live you need a detector. the only 2 choices are 8500 and v1 the rate similar in tests but mostly anyone who used both agrees v1 tops 8500 in the real world, as most tests are done in the middle of nowhere. ofcourse v1 is 400 and 8500 is 250 so there is price factor

Ok I've had the unit installed for just over 4 months now.I absolutly love it.On my daily highway adventures to and from school this thing has really proved its self to me.Ive been through countless speed traps and so far the cops are 0-10, this thing really knocks them down with more than adequate time to slow down.

When motorist like to "ride with me" @ 80 and 85mph and my x-50 chirps with the all familiar sound, i do a friendly tap of the brakes, but everyone likes to speed up and pass me :3d_frown: , i look over to see if they are running radar like me( usually they are)i see it and say to myself "u better slow down the big dog detector is going off."

This happened yesterday. I had 2 cars in front of me,everybody bumper to bumper beside a semi truck running 70ish.The car in front is tryin push the lead car so they will get in the slow lane and let everybody pass. After about 3 miles of this we finally made progress, they decided to finally speed up. Well they do and merge to the slow lane infront of the semi-truck and the car in front of me proceeds to punch it.Well when they decided to rocket speed up real quick my x-50 had already been hitting for about 20 seconds(low strenghth).Me speeding up to just 75 to get past the truck and other slow car watch as the suv in front of me slammed on the brakes and jumped over real quick to reveal to me the state cop that was coming the opposite direction.

Once he rode by going east i sped back up to 80 passing the suv and looked over to see if they had radar, yep. They sure did right up in the windshield under the rearview mirror. To put it to you this way, apparenty they didnt get notice of radar untill he came around the long bend and almost in view. While i am behind several vehicles (bumper to bumper next to a semi) picked him up before he was even visible coming around the long bend.:naughty:

Thats my little testimony, i got bored to decided to leave some feedback on this detector now that ive had it in for a while.

Well After a year and some change of owning this dectect its time to retire it. She has done me well. The last few months of ownership i have litterally seen 5 people pulled over right in front of my eyes, and in every instance it COULD have been me but never was. And i owe it all to my escort 8500 x-50.

Now i must start a new venture with the Bel Rx-65.I expect nothing but the best from the rx-65 considering bel and escort are the same company. As before give me a few months with this unit and ill tell you how well it works. :biglaugh: (even though they will propably perform the exact same)

OK, all I really have to say is:

To all those who continually say that radar detectors are useless any more, or in this situation, that situation... you're full of it. Learn how to use them and you'll see that they are certainly useful all the time. Laser, K, Ka, X... whatever.

Ive heard about those. there is a box that you mount on the front bumper (under the skin) and one of the back. then you can hide the control unit in the a/c vent.... ive thought about this before but I wonder what the consequences would be if you got caught with it though. but there would be no way in hell i would pay that much for one.......Either way though even if you did have one if you were really breaking away from traffic they are going to know you are going way over.

I got busted doing 130 in a 55 (4am with absolutely nobody else on the road). $500 would have been cheap compared to the ticket and subsequent increase in my insurance.
