Hey everyone I'm new to this forum and just picked up an '88 Supra with a 7mGTE 5 speed. It had a blown head gasket and the previous owner got it fixed by a sketchy back yard mechanic so there are a few problems. It would start after I put a decent battery in it but ran like it was plugged right up. After taking the exhaust off from the turbo elbow back it ran GREAT so I'm looking for a new exhaust system.

I want to completely restore the car but am afraid of taking the engine out right now, so what should I check over first or replace to make sure the engine is running at the top of it's game?

I'll post some pics and maybe a video tomorrow.

THANKS!

Welcome, but pay attention where you post. This is the Technical Section...general questions like this belong:
Guess where? The General Section!

Thread moved.

Suggest you lurk for a bit and read the stickys in the Intro section (especially on "how to search"):

Thanks for the welcome and the advice, much appreciated.

I am also a long time member of an ATV forum so that might help me get the hang of things around here.

LOL...don't worry about IJ, he's harmless ;)
(at least most of the time)

Dumbo's advice was good...get all the maintenance stuff done...fluids, hoses, belts, brakes, etc. Don't even think about the basic upgrades till you do. You want a good starting point for when things break...and, on this car, that will happen.

Actually, he bites. But since he's so old he'll just gum at you for a bit and then fall asleep... :evil2:

Just took some pics while I was installing some NGK G-Power plugs to try and get this thing running better, wires are on order and I have a new fuel filter waiting to be put on..

I found a few strange things about this car though, I read on a website that the cruise control wasn't moved over to the steering wheel until '89 but my ownership is telling me this is an '88. Check the dash picture.

There is also some sort of stuff sprayed onto the firewall and pretty much the entire engine compartment that makes it look like ass, I want to take everything out and re paint it but I'm afraid lol.

It's got some pretty bad rust but I think the whole car is in decent shape, let me know what you think!

hell if it was carburetor id say idle set too low... could it be timing??? possibly running too lean/rich? are you smelling any excesses of gas? another thing, is definately go over your vacuum lines and check for leaks. if your vacuum tubing has opens or leaks, it will just shut down after a little bit, much like yours is doing

It's not rust. It's ghetto weight reduction.
Sorry, I couldnt help it. Sorry if I missed it, but seriously now, what are your long term plans for the car? And what is your budget, roughly speaking, to achieve that goal? And btw, welcome to the forum.
