May have narrowed down the clunking.

OK, i have a weird clunking sound on deceleration (when I TOTALLY take my foot off petal) then pressing it again, and also when switching gears sometimes. I tried something the other day and I got the clunk to appear at a stop. I was neutral in a drivethru mcdicks, put it into first gear, realized the guy in front was not moving, put back into neutral and basicly dropped the clutch in neutral and there it was, the clunk. my clutch has 10,000 kms on it and it shifts great. What else could be making this nosie from just simply letting off the clutch fast while the car has been put into first then back into neutral?

Even when your in neutral the friction of the oil on the gears will make the tailshaft move a little bit when you release the clutch. My money is on bad U-joints or carrier bearing

might sound odd but did you check the bolts on the tranny crossdresser....err I mean crossmember? oddly enough mine were loose on my car when I bought it.

also can you pinpoint the direction of the sound? meaning more from say, the back of the engine/front of the tranny...or more center, or more towards the rear of the trans? of is it not anywhere near the trans....a little more description would be good

the noise seams to come from the rear. anywhere between the back of the transmission to the rear diff. My carrier bearing was all fucked up so the driveshaft did help a bit. But I am still hearing the noise.

Start from front to back:

Check the transmission mounts.

Check the u-joints.

Jack the back of the car up, put the parking brake on, put the trans in neutral and climb under it and turn the driveshaft. See if have gear slap in your rear, it's not that uncommon for cars this old.

Check the rear subframe, be sure you haven't cracked it.

Try all than and let us know what you find.

I have the same clunk and I found its caused by two things:

1.)The rear diff lash is incorrect

2.)The clunk clunk clunk that you hear when the engine is running and the clutch is released in neutral is the input shaft. Im not sure how this fails or what is broken, but its the input shaft having a horrible time.

i've got a clunk in my rear end too. it's from worn bushings. whenever i let off the throttle, it makes the clunk, whenever i floor it again, it does it too.
