The timing was off. Way off - Advanced -
Make sure your CPS bolt is tight!

I could only hear it occasionally, at idle. Never while under load while accelerating. When it did happen I tried to determine if it was just the injectors, valves, loose heat shield... Never could quite pin it down, cause it wasn't consistent. I am not for certain the length of time this occurred. It was at least a couple weeks if not more. Pretty sure it was not more than two months.

So I did some research on possible causes, besides those I listed previously, and came up with water pump going out, harmonic balancer loose and timing off. The easiest and first thing I checked this evening was the timing and it was way off. ~17° base. I corrected it and no more rattle.

This thread is to find out what kind of problems I should expect and how to test for them. :icon_ques

if its not making any noises and still runs strong, oil pressure is good, you should be fine, mechanical parts such as engine parts don't go bad, they are either broken or not broken. unlike an electronic part where if it gets a voltage spike it could do damage and cause it to fail shortly but still work good for the time bieng.

I bet that's what's wrong with mine. I hear what sounds to be like a knock, but it goes away when I give it gas. I know my timing is off too, and I'm hoping to be able to correct it with my new standalone.

So I had two of those possibilities wrong with my engine.

The pinging was gone. Drove it to work today and the tapping was still there, intermittently. I rev it and it goes away, turn on the A/C and the tapping starts again. Blip the accelerator and it goes away. Couldn't hear it on the highway. Sounded like this tapping.wma

So I set the socket on the crank pulley bolt to check it, turn it to tighten it and it turn as freely as you may
Now I have it to 200ft/lb and no more tapping.

Anybody think my water pump is going out too?

ah, the tapping was the strokes of the ac compressor shocking the pully threw the belt, Looks like everything should be ok. i wouldnt see why the water pump would have issue.....unless someone else sees a reason.

It seems I may have been mistaken about my CPS bolt being lose.

I went to confirm my timing alignments, valve and ignition. First I find TDC on cylinder #1 and check the timing notch on the crank pulley… It’s setting about 13° :aigo:. It seems the outer rings on the crank pulley has slipped when the crank bolt was loose and banging against the engine.

Ok, I make a mark where 0° TDC is, on the pulley. Then I check the cams alignment, that checks ok. Then I check the CPS alignment and that checks ok. Start it up and put a timing light on it. Set the mark I made for stock timing and the original notch was high. The same place it was when I thought my timing was “way advanced”.

I did not pull the crank pulley off yet so I don’t know if it was just the outer ring that has slipped or something more damaged like the crank and woodruff key. I’m ordering the ATI Super Damper like jdub‘s. I’ll know the extent of the damage then.

And; My vacuum is where it should be ≥19inhg. Low vacuum is the symptom I’ve chasing down to find out what’s been going on with my engine. I was low because I had retarded ignition to set the original notch to stock timing :stickpoke

I come from a land down under
Isnms: This is why I always suggest to check that TDC is actually at 0 on the damper as our cars get older it's becoming a more common issue.

<fingers crossed> It hasn't trashed the Crank Snout.

The ATI Dampers go on DAMN TIGHT so you might get away with it if the Snout is damaged.

IJ - it was actually some of your post, mentioning slipping outer ring on damper, in other threads that prompted me to confirm TDC. Thanks for the info.

I searched ;) :D
