So what happens when my welds break at the track? No matter what my car is undriveable... And the tracks are uaually 3 - 8 hours away. For some people like me a real LSD is better in the case that something does happen to the diff I can still drive home. And no I am not going to tow it home.. because the price for a tow will equal the diff.

I've read quite a few stories about people losing the welds in their diffs and still being able to get their car home since it just reverted back to being an open diff.

As long as the weld doesn't jam anything in the diff, it makes sense that you'll be able to get home on it (anyone care to correct me?).

You can disagree all you want. But I've had diffs that didn't work and then I shimmed a different diff and it lasted for 1.5 events. And then I went to a welded and it was a lot better.

The stock LSD is great for street driving, it doesn't make any noise, it's quiet, you can't even tell it's not doing anything. But for drifting, it's horrible. For road racing, you can get away with stock lsd depending on the some things, but if you have any trouble lifting a rear wheel or putting power down on corner exit, it's because of the stock diff.

As for welded versus 2-way, they are very similar. But a good 2-way is a nice investment. I have driven both in differrent cars. For drifting, I would almost rather just have a welded, but for road racing, I would like the benefits of a LSD. I really want the ATS Carbon diff for the car at some point. It has a nice smooth engagement and won't unsettle the car. I mean for the most part the diff will be locked, but there's those times where it shouldn't be and that is when the LSD really pays off.

I've always wanted a Kaaz diff for about 2 years now. I've actually been talking to them since last week about setting up an account and now i'm going to carry them. I didnt even see this thread till now, I didnt know people were into them. I could talk to them about doing a group buy if you guys would be interested? Looks like they retail for 900-1100. If standard rates apply would you be interested in $700 for a diff?

So if I wasn't interested in drifting (and I mean not even in the slightest), what would be the best choice? I plan to do road course and auto slalom events and I recognize that after 230,xxx km, my stock LSD is in need of replacement.

It sounds like the 2-way is solely for drifting and could be dangerous in a road race situation. Say you downshift a little too aggressively, the rear tires would have a tendency to lock up and you end up in the fescue. The 1.5-way sounds like it would be more forgiving but could still cause the same problem.

Could you knowledgeable guys clarify why I would want both wheels to lock up (or at least contribute some form of braking) on decell.

1.5 way Jamie. and if you're road racing, you shouldn't have a problem with a beginner move like down shifting far too aggressively. This is novice shit yo.

Well you say that it can't happen, but if one was pushing it, they would probably be taking full advantage of the additional braking from down shifting. The wheels wouldn't even have to lock up to upset the balance of the car. I'm just looking for a setup that would allow me to push the car as hard as possible while being safe. I will probably just go with a fresh stock LSD with the solid shim. That way I won't lose any driveability on the street.

well this is the kicker since supra is fat pimp the lock up is not harsh at all and is smooth in gauge ment

i remmber i had 1.5 way in my rx7 and the lock up in that car was crazy but it was 1.5 way weight play big factor whne it come sot lock up

if i down shift and drop the cluthc i get chrip and that is all

i have tried clutch drop skid the supra just wonte do it cause it is far to heavy of a car


but i am happy wiht my car and my 2 way i plan to use it for road race and auto x

i have beaton my record down the windy pass wiht this 2 way so i am happy

and if you don't like it clock it to a 1.5 way easy as that once the perload is asjut you can pop the diff in and out when ever you want

Ha ha, tell me about it. It could happen with a few people though, would only need like 5.
But i plan of focusing on road racing to so i'm more interested in the 1.5 also. But the price could apply to either.
Maybe i'll get the 2way use it as 2way for the occasional drift and then clock it for 1.5 way for NASA. Versatile i like it!

honestly, if ALL you intend to do is drift your car... save the money and go welded. if you plan to do other stuff like gymkhana and other road course events, invest in a 2-way or a 1.5way.

Even the shop-based, sponsored Drift cars in D1GP run welded diffs.

ive already mentioned the pros and cons... if people with virtually unlimited budgets to set up their drift cars opt for a welded diff over a 2-way, that oughta tell you something...

Nash, i know what you mean about the supra and rx7 reacting differently to inputs. shift-lock and clutch kicking my RX7 was alot more predictable. it did exactly what i wanted it to do when i did the inputs. the Supra takes ALOT more harsh of an input to get it to do what my rx7 could do easily.
