Started disassembling the head I was going to put on my N/A when going N/A-T, but now im reconsidering. I know scoring is normal in 7Ms, but isn't this excessive?

That looks pretty bad, but I've run some pretty nasty looking cams before and never had an issue. I've never heard of anyone having a failure due to excessive cam wear on a 7m.

Since there's only minor scoring on the second journal on the intake side, but all the caps are excessively scored, would it be a good idea to get a set of used caps?

I wouldn't mix-match caps and heads. Keep them in order and together.

Personally. I'd find a better head. There's tons of 7m heads not be used out there. And turbo and na heads are the same.

And ya don't mix match caps from different heads. And keep them in the order the marked. Also torque to specs in the sequence.

That engine was not taken care of, look at all that sludge. I bet everything will be out of spec due to the lack of lubrication. You could knock down the rough edges and Mic/plastigauge it to see if its in spec.

At this point I just need the head. Nothing in the bottom end is bad.

I pulled this out of a parts car in hope that I could slightly work it and put it on my car when i went the NA-T route.

I figured it would be not good for use. It came out of a car that had a thrown rod. I was just hoping for the best. Oh well.
Thrown rod = bits and pieces of bearing material through out the motor, I wouldn't use much of anything that "moves" from that motor.

Very first thing to check is the heads hardness EVERYTHING else is secondary to this, if it's soft it's junk.

Agreed. I had a soft head on my last rebuild. Unfortunately finding a shop that offers hardness testing is near impossible in Denver...

Yeah, I'd love to check the hardness.. But I'm pretty sure finding a shop in Nebraska that has that equipment is going to be impossible. Especially if its that bad in Denver. Haha

Im just going to end up buying one of the two heads in the Classifieds.

This is not a nice head. There is too much black carbon, probably due to old oil not beeing change.
Find something else, the best : it should be gold color inside without black like this one.
And try GE head instead of GTE. Less BHG...
