Increasing stock boost question...

I am wanting to get a manual boost controller, and hopefully boost my stock turbo a little bit more. I have an 1989, and I know that it is set at 6.8 psi from factory. I have been doing a little bit of research, and seen that boosting the car, with everything bone stock, that 10 psi is as much as people would go.

All I have on my car at the moment is HKS MHG, ARP bolts, and HKS BOV. I am about to put on a down pipe (2.5" inlet - 3" outlet), and currently in the process of getting a 3" piece of pipe bent for a straight pipe.

My question is, what do you guys think the most you would boost with this lite set up?

Thanks.

fuel cut is any where from 10-14psi and the stock turbo is only good to about 14psi.

Oh I see. Now, do you think that if I boosted the stock turbo to 10-12 psi, that I would be okay with the stock motor?

Well you have got a metal head gasket, which is a really good thing compared to what alot of people have when they start upping boost. I would think that 10-12 psi is a realistic and fairly safe level for you to use. Even with a MHG though be sure it was retorqued properly after the initial install as a safe measure.

Manual boost controllers always worry me a bit though. They have a very nasty habit of easily failing and not controlling boost accurately. I would really urge you to invest in something a little more reliable.

But if the motor is in good shape as it sounds like it may be. I think your good to go. It's also encouraging that you have researched it a bit rather than just "given'r" and then coming here with problems resulting from that attitude.

But yes, fuel cut will slam in on you at or before 14 psi, but anything 14 psi and higher is just making more heat than anything with the stock turbo.
