Sans AFM during start the ECU uses STA and IDL closed to set ignition timing and injection. After start it uses IDL open for another set of valves for them. All you get are those two so don't expect normal behavior but generally speaking an engine in good condition should start and run surprising well as long as one doesn't ask for hard acceleration. This is the case with every car I've worked with. The point is the ECU is programmed to not leave you in a lurch. That said in fairness to you I've edited the article to reflect a possible no start/run since I suppose it could occur depending on engine temp, condition, ect.
