posting for my brother because he wont shut up. i was sitting with him while driving on the local highway here, we were going to pick something up from my machinist. ANYWAY we were driving in traffic. 1st gear all the time practically then out exit came and then boom. he was shifting, pressed the clutch pedal in, it hit the floor and didn't come back up so he tried to move the car into gear and it grinded a bit in 2nd. so then we get off the highway and go on the side pass. i look under and i can see his slave cylinder just sitting there. i figured the bolt must have stripped off or came loose or maybe the slave just broke. the line is still fine, just the slave is hanging. We ended up driving 2nd gear all the way there because we did the little startup trick.
How bad is a short grind in 2nd gear. it rides fine and the gear doesn't slip. what should we do now since it was a quick grind. any input is appreciated.

Should be fine, just 1 rough shift over many in the transmission's lifetime.

PS Google "floating the gears." That got me back when my MK2 Supra's slave cylinder spontaneously exploded 160miles from home...

If he can completely trash a gear with a single grind, he's got talent. Tell him to stop worrying about it. My first wife ground from gear to gear for months trying to learn to drive stick on my old Mk2, never did kill the tranny.

You can grind many many many times before doing any noticable damage to the syncros/gears.

You should have been able to shift with some rev matching and no clutch as well.

In any case, it sounds like a fun time. :(

When you grind you aren't actually even grinding the drive gears, just the dog teeth on the shift collar. Don't worry about it - unless you are putting a lot of force into the shifter while it is grinding you really won't do any damage.

i wasn't going to play around with rev matching, i have done it before but it sucks majorly. i just did the 2nd gear startup trick for about a mile.
