It's ridiculously difficult to come by a very honest and knowledgeable machine shop... I thought I had found one, and drove 6+ hours each way to drop off my engine and still ended up getting screwed over by their shitty work and lack of attention to detail. I found that the main problem is people in machine shops do not like to be told what to do, and THEY ALWAYS know better. Unfortunately our motors don't follow the same guidelines that a lot of other engines they may work on do; they think they can apply the same things to our engine, and get on the defensive when you try to tell them how you want things done.

I feel the same way, I'm paying you to do what I what done. That should be final.

Very reason I turn down many jobs. Some customers want "half ass" work done to fit a budget. Some customers "think" they know what is best for their motor and don't. If I can not do the job the correctly as it should be done, I just tell the customer that I would rather not do their motor. If you take your motor to an un-known shop or to a shop with limited to no 7m experience then you only have yourself to blame. For every story about a machine shop, I have 10 more about a customer. Believe me, it goes both ways.

With 7m's being so rare, that is very difficult. I live in Phoenix which is a damn big city, and did a hefty amount of research trying to find a good machine shop. Turns out the shop everyone locally takes their motors to cant even get a smooth finish on the deck. Its understandable it goes both ways but how many 7m specialists are there out there, and why don't they reveal themselves? I ended up traveling to Los Angeles to get my machine work done, if only I had known Aaron at Driftmotion built motors at the time that is probably where I would have been.

Someone should make a sticky of any shop proven to be able to machine our motors. Freight on a motor is only about 180 to 200 each way to most anywhere in the country. So the price to send your motor out to get a proper job is only limited by the extra 400 bucks to send it out. But for some reason, that 400 bucks, is just what "most" 7m owners look to avoid as a cost savings. But how much money did we really save by not getting the job right the first time? Heck, for just a bare block, it is only 65.00 in a wood box for fedex ground. I know guys who sent their motor halfway around the world just to have it done proper.

If I had the money, I would send my block to Rich, and whatever machine work he said it needed is what would be done...but I don't have that kind of money right now...which is why I'm not currently attempting to build an engine.

I agree, for me hind sight is 20/20. BTW, great to see you back and posting. Glad to hear things are going better. I liked your Thank You SM thread, should have responded there when I read it first with no replies.
