Is there a guide somehwhere, or could somebody tell me on how to install a new headunit(radio, deck, w/e you call it) on my own in my 88 supra?

buy a wire harness (autozone, best buy, circuit city)
buy a radio pocket to put below your new single DIN head unit (same place)
buy an install kit (same place)
total cost around 30-40 bucks

splice/solder on your wire harness
take the ashtray out
take the trim off around the radio/shifter
unclip wires for cig lighter and any thing else connected back there
take 4 screws out of the radio
install dash kit and pocket as instructed in packaging
connect wires
replace trim

don't think 88 came with factory amp.. not sure. may complicate things. my 92 did but it was replaced with aftermarket by prev owner and i put my amp there and used his aftermarket wires.

well i have an aftermarket headunit in my car right now, it already has the pocket, so do i just need to take the trim off and swap?

well depending on if whoever put that in used a wiring harness.. if they just spliced into the factory wires you could be in for a fun time.. if they used a harness, then you just need to take the harness off their radio wires and put it on your radio wires. then its a direct swap, just screws and time.

circuit city sells what they call a smart harness. its a 2pc deal. first piece is the factory harness side and has a universal plug on the other end. then the second piece has the same universal plug on one end then the deck specific plug on the other. its super easy. took me all of 30 seconds to install. plus, if you wanted to swap out to another deck later on, you just buy the deck side harness and plug that in. even easier.

I can get the trim off in like a minute. Taken it off so many times. I'm on my 4th HU in the last 4 months.

If they have destroyed the factory harness, I can give you the color codes for the wires so that you can wire it up. They haven't changed in close to 20 years.

Basically, if you already have an aftermarket unit, you will re-use thw bracketry, etc. Just have to get back there and see what's going on with the wiring. Pretty easy tho, to just match up the wires to the functions (speakers, antenna, ground, power, etc).

Do a couple of searches and have your wire codes/colors ready and U should be good to go.

I have a couple of extra "intermediate" harnesses (connector to factory harness and the pigtails)... one of which is new (no cut wires) and we used in the Fiance's MKIV for a relatively newer model Sony HU.... Should work on other newer Sony HU...if anyone wants a complete plug-n-play into the factory harness.

Many people do not know that the proper way to install into almost all toyotas is to use the factory metal brackets from the stock stereo. It bolts up perfectly without the need for the trim ring, metal sleeve or an install kit. If you need to fill the space buy a toyota pocket, many stereo shops sell them. I used to work at one and this was standard procedure.

^^^ What he said, never buy an "install kit" for the Supra. Use the factory brackets, and a Toyota DIN pocket, you can even get a Toyota DIN pocket with a flip-down cover on it. They are about $5.00 and $20.00 respectively from Toyota.

Buy the harness adapter, that's like $3.00, then the DIN pocket, another $5.00, that's like $8.00. No need to spend much more than that.
