Glasspack VS Resonator

Doing a little reading, I'm interested in quieting down just a little. I know a glass pack would be less restrictive(by that tiny amount) but how much less raspy/quiet will the car become?

I love its sound at high RPM's, I just can't stand the resonance at low RPM's, where supras all tend to resonate(1500-2200RPM, where I spend most of my normal city driving time).

So SM, what do you recommend? Should I have my exhaust guy weld me on a glass pack, or a old fashioned resonator.

I've got my eye on an Aero Exhaust resonator. Free flowing, well designed and probably quieter than a glasspack would be.

I have the same problem. I'm running a flowmaster and it was so loud and I had the irritating low rpm resonance. I added a glasspack to quiet it down (which it did) but, it didn't help with the low rpm resonance. Back to the drawing board for me. I will have to chuck the flowmaster for a different muffler and add a resonator.

Well let me clarify, I'm not looking for quiet, I'm looking to remove droney resonance.

I've had positive results with resonators quieting things down, i think as long as you get a long enough one with a quality muffler you should be in business

I already have a full 3 inch exhaust(minus the gutted Cat) ending at a HKS Carbon Ti.

I may try to find an 18 inch resonator depending on his suggestions.

I don't think 18" will fit unless it's got a real thin body. I was told by the owner of the shop that did mine to look for something around 14".

The gutted cat has a lot to do with the drone. Unless there is a straight pipe inside the cat, the noise resonates inside and creates a hollowish sound which really ads to noise levels and drone. I say get a resonator regardless because it will sound better, but also consider getting a test pipe or insert a pipe inside the cat.

Read my thread...that's what I'm saying, ie...the muffler and the glass pack quieted it down but it did nothing to address the low rpm droning sound, which is what I was trying to get rid of (or at least diminish).

So I would recommend a resonator and forget about adding a glasspack etc.

I'm glad you asked, I meant to mention it in my previous post.

I am running a test pipe. I have tried putting the cat on to see if it helped with the droning sound, but it made no difference (other then a noticeable power loss) so I put the test pipe back on.

I think the reonator is the best way to get rid of that low rpm howl.

My Apexi exhaust had a built in resonator and it still droned like crazy on the hyway. Sounded great when you got on it, but the small muffler was no dought the culprit for the drone.

You might be right but couldn't it still be the resonator?

As I understand it, the resonator has to be specific to the car. As I recall a resonator echos an oposite sound wave which cancels out the exhaust note at a given frequency.

Glasspacks have louvered cores which does 2 things:

-reduces effective diam of the pipe
-induces a lot of turbulence (some more than others pending if the louvers are open to the flow of gas or not)

This is what gives them their 'unique' sound. a small bullet or round style muffler will solve your issue.

On the other hand, I really don't have $2500/cat to spend for getting popped for running w/o a cat (EPA, not state fine). That $2500 will buy you a lot more HP than a test pipe. A cat will quiet down the exhaust as well as not stink.

Even ebay bullet mufflers are not lovered and work good.

I'm beginning to believe that my problem is unfortunately my Muffler, and I don't want to get rid of that.

I think I may just add a resonator and see what happens, They can't be too much money.

I may just go thru with my custom dual muffler exhaust idea.(IE replicate the Trust system)

Exhaust tuning is a bit of a black art, the 1st dual mid muffler I made worked well was fairly quiet but the second one with just a change in volume and shape is much quieter.

As SB said the size/shape/location in the pipe is important and is what sets the expensive exhausts apart from the cheap ones.

My suggestion would be to try and copy a known non droning system if you can.
