finally got around to the fiberglass, it looks like ive got a long road ahead of me. right now the thing pushing me is the vision of the finished product ive got in my head:icon_bigg

anyway, took the console/dash trim out and foiled it, then got the first layer of glass on. took me three days to do that, working around two jobs. tomorrow i plan to do some major sanding and trimming, then add another layer on top of that before i peel my original away. after a little more sanding/trimming i suppose my last layer will be added to the back, to give me some filler from behind/let me have somethin to screw the shift boot onto and screw into the dash itself.

at finish, i hope to accomplish the removal of the cigarette lighter and ashtray, and have two gauges in their place.

What did you use to make that? Did you use the dash black trim piece and layed it over top, or is the fiberglass something you designed on it's own?
More info, looks good so far!

Thanks

EDIT: looked at the pictures a third time and noticed the black trim behind it. How well does the fiberglass stick to the plastic?

I think he's planning on removing the original... might be wrong though.

Don't keep layin' the FG ontop though, it builds up pretty quick. Looking good so far. :bigthumb:

I've got an idea for mine I really want to try out, but it'll have to wait until I have a little vacation time.

cre called it. ive got aluminum foil underneath and it should peel away pretty well. i trimmed and sanded some tonight, ill have pics in a little while. yeah, planning on removing the original, because three layers of fg alone should be enough to keep it rigid while maintaining about the same thickness.

tomorrow illl lay a little more fg and cover up some bald spots (you can see my gaps in the coming pics) and then hopefully peel it off. then comes the second layer on top and the third layer on bottom.

yeah, in the last thread i said i didnt wanna waste good gauges on a bad fiberglass job. add to that the fact that my car is only NA right now, and these gauges are some of the better ones advance had. i didnt wanna get too in depth before the engine swap. after that, ill probably be redoing another console for a set of defi gauges.

from the last set of pics, can anyone tell me if i need to do more sanding or will body filler take care of that at the end?

Sorry for the dumb question, but how are you going to mount the fiberglass afteer its all finished? Same as stock or are you going to make something?

Thanks.

well i havent gotten that far yet, to tell you the truth. id planned on screwing it in on the drivers side where the stock one screwed in, maybe used bondo to build it up some so it would hold a screw. as for the rest of it, i was going to look for some panel clips and see if i could secure those to it. if not, i guess just some countersunk stainless hardware will hold it. whatcha think?

by the way, i had the great idea to take pics nightly/with more work every day and store them in dated folders along with a description of what got done/my thoughts on the project. would this be of use to anyone?

The stock one isn't held in by much so a couple screws should be fine. When I do mine I am going to see if I can outline the edges in thin wood for more strength when I go to screw it in place.

Good luck, keep pics coming.

ive always got the option to put some pieces of 1/8 inch lauan on the back of this and then put another layer of fg on, sandwiching it. might try that at key places, it'd be a lot less trouble than cutting an outline (or maybe that's what you intended in the first place)

tonight's pics, work started at 11 and ended at 1. almost completed another layer of FG, with the exception of a few edges here and there. also did a little more sanding before the second layer. after i get the edges finished, it'll be time to trim and then crack the FG away from the original. hope that goes well...

got the fg away from the original piece, finally. took a screwdriver and worked on it a fair amount before it pulled away. need to do some major sanding and cutting with the dremel, and then apply a third and final layer of fg to the backside (also have to add places to screw into for the shift boot). after that, it'll be cutting, sanding and bondo time. yeehaa! its comin along:drink1:
