Ok, I have a 90 NA mk3 and I want to know if anybody has attempted to eleminate the distributor ignition system for a coil pack system.

if so, How did you do it and what was required?
I've been looking around but haven't found anything on it.

Is this even Possible?

Thanks for any input.

BTW, I'm adding a turbo system in the very near future.

This has been done plenty of times and the people who usually do it, also add the turbo. This is known as the N/A-T converion.

There's a plethora of info on this, you just have to search.

*edit* took under a minute to find this.

Another way is getting the old HKS igntion system that allowed you to switch to the coil pack. Good luck finding one though.

It'd take some creativity, but anything's possible. I was actually musing about doing this earlier tonight myself. It's possible... how easily it can be done.. dunno, I haven't gotten that far.

Switching over to the GTE electronics has it's downsides. While the package is all ready together, it's a lot of work and lets not forget that it's programmed and built for a turbo charged engine... less aggressive timing curves, fuel cut (like you'll ever hit that on an N/A), different type of AFM, two knock sensors. There are alot of requirements that you'll be hard pressed to meet, mostly involving swapping over additional electronics.

I'll post more when I have more time to think about the implementation using a GE ECU.

EDIT:
One thing alot of people are modifying to convert their cars is an EDIS (It's Ford... RUN!!!) system:

http://www.megamanual.com/ms2/EDIS.htm

You would need to add a crank position sensor and possibly a different cam position sensor. It's a wasted spark setup and still relies on the ECU for spark timing. I have no idea if the GTE's CPS would work or if it could be modified to work.

At a glance it appears some people have modified their distributor to determine the firing order using other coil systems. Wether that would work with an EDIS system I don't know. The systems that people were using that solution for are quite pricey.

EDIT2:
Another possibility... It'd probably be just a bulky, but more reliable.
"In the USA, a good supplier of kits to convert points distributors to an electronic system is RML in Daytona Beach, Florida. These people specialize in bolt-on conversion kits for Alfa Romeo, and they can supply kits for other older vehicles with points ignition."

a member of the toronto supra club, Tim Annen has installed 7mgte electronics on his turbocharged 6m....cps and all. Try and contact him, he may be able to help if you're serious.
