Been a bit of a lurker on here for a while but lately Ive been reading more and more build threads on here and Im quite impressed! Figured I'd start my own thread as things are starting to get serious and I have a few questions for the greater A70 community. :)

Brief history:
This is my 2nd 2JZ A70 supra build, hopefully the 1st I will finish (although its really only the same build continued across to chassis'). First was a stock GA70 I managed to break the turbos and transmission in one go, was originally going to put a 1JZ/R154 into it but problems sourcing a halfcut lead me to buy an Aristo halfcut instead.

Pics....

p1733244_8.jpg

At this point, after much emotional dramas I CBFd going ito, I got stuck/lost interest. The car drove, did skids/etc, but had problems with the transmission and was not ready for a proper rego inspection.

In the midst of my boredom I bought this:

p1733244_10.jpg

(Dont have any engine bay pics though)

MA70 with a 2JZ/R154 fitted in Japan, picked it up for a song, already registered. I drove it, did skids, had fun and then sold it to a mate when I thought my other one wasnt far off being done.

Alas, the white one was still far off being done....

My mate took it, painted it, put a built A340e into it, T04z, microtech....ran an 11.2s pass in it then swapped it for an Evo because he is a homo. The other homo he got the evo off eventually fucked it up, stripped it and sold the shell off....so, some 4 years after I sold my running 2JZ/R154 A70 supra....I bought it back as a shell.

The beauty of this shell is because in Australia, converting engines is an expensive process...this shell is already engineer approved for a 2JZ, with the mod plates to prove it. Although I need to have some minor inspections done to re-register it when its running again....its a $55 process instead of the ~$1,500 process had I finished the conversion in my GA70. Plus, this shell is widebody, the GA70 was narrow body, this one has a better diff and poly bushes throughout, the white one had flogged bushes which to replace would have cost me as much as I paid for this shell ($1,000)

Heres how I got it....

Now begins the interesting stuff.....

I already had a 2JZ and everything I needed to make it run in this car....but I wanted a manual car, stock twins are pretty lame after this much effort and, although being a chronic tight-arse, I had some *better* plans this time round.

So I bought the following....

T56 adapter plate, to work with a factory A340e bellhousing.

Heres where Im currently up to....

Aim from here is to prep/paint the engine bay gloss black, install mechanical bits, re-wire the entire car, install interior, do test skids, prep/paint body, do more skids.

Have a heap of questions for you learned foke but I have a date with a BBQ and a bottle of whisky and Im running late! BRB

Nah that Wolfie bloke moved to the US. I moved from Brisbane to Canberra a while back. I visited the US earlier this year but have no plans of ever moving there (although the price and availability of their parts almost has me considering it some days!!)

Just read some of your stuff recently.....didnt realise your supra came to an untimely end, sorry to hear but glad you walked away from it. That thing was a bit ridiculous for reality, I guess now its moved onto folklore where it belongs. :p

Ahhhh (damn alzhiemers.. ;) )

LOL yeah it was a wakeup call for sure!

I asked the guys here if they wanted me to hang around since I didn't have a Supera and no one said "go away" so here I am!

Shuddering at your mention of "Wiring"

Haha, yeah wiring is going to be a big job. Ive just helped a mate wire up his datsun 1600 rally car using the same kit, its not all that hard, just tedious. Most annoying bit is figuring out a nice way of mounting the weird shaped fuse box.

BTW, anyone know how the wiper motor disconnects from the arm mechanism? Ive got the bolts undone but I cant get the prick of a thing out. Bit hungover at the moment so my brain isnt all there, which isnt helping. :p

IJ, You are probably one of the most (If not the actual most) renown SM member on the board to be honest, due to your wisdom and kindly offered information and many many posts XD, back to op now. Very cool build! but I have to ask why the t56? I hear that they aren't reliable. Which was the reason I myself have not further ventured into the GM world.

Theyre a tremec box, used in many many cars, not just GM. I dont know where you heard they werent reliable, theyre actually rated higher than a V160 and much much cheaper (I picked mine up for $1,000)

The main reason I chose it is for the ratios, Toyota boxes have shit ratios. The T56 has similar ratios to an OS Giken R154, but with a bonus gear. If I up my redline a little I can pull over 80kmhr in first gear, as opposed to the near useless first gear in an R154/V160.

Cheers IJ, will put a bit more force into the thing.

I have a clique of Camaro friends that claim that their gear boxes don't hold up under bolt-ons, I know that the transmission was also used in a cobra/viper/aston martin, but how much difference do they have?

More than happy to help out if I know the answer to something :)

I don't really get the whole "It's a secret" Clique at times.....

Are you sure your mates dont mean their clutches? I dont know specifically about camaros but GM seems to put some pretty weak clutches in their cars these days.

Not too sure what the differences are to the Aston Martin/etc models but I know there are a couple of variations in input/output shaft splines/etc, ratios differ between GM/Ford vehicles...wouldnt surprise me if they change a fair bit but there are plenty of turbo LS1 powered heavy GMs running round with a T56 without problems, so I think I'll be fine.

T56's are a little on the weak side (keep in mind I broke a brand new TKO a couple of times) I had a T56 here at one stage but ditched the install after taking some measurements and finding it was going to require tunnel surgery between the seats.

Pretty sure not all of them are created equal, the Dodge ones seem to be the pick of the litter strength wise.

Nice build thread...good luck with the swap/wiring.

The only thing I don't like on the R154 is the big gap from 2nd to 3rd gear, and the very long 5th (0.75). Other than that
it is a perfect gearbox for a car like Supra or a muscle car with big torque!
And actualy 1st gear on a stock MA70 turbo (7mgte - 6250 redline) with a 3.72 diff tops at 63 km/h.
I have a 2jz single turbo with a 3.72 rear diff and 7200 redline and I top my 1st gear on the R154 at about 75km/h.
And I could raise my rev limit to 8200 on the AEM...then I should top it around 85km/h !

IJ : You never had an R154 on your car? What's your opinion on the R154...ratios?

You broke a TKO? Umm....ok. Sorry IJ, but Im gonna have to put that down to driving style. Justen with the twin turbo 1UZ GT4 celica runs a TKO in his car, from memory it runs 1:02 around wakefield, potentially flat 1min laps....he hasnt broken a TKO, and his car gets driven hard, on slicks.

I guess time will tell how strong/weak my box is, but at $1,800 for a full rebuild, or $3,000 for a brand new box, I still think the T56 is a bargain for what you get.

RE ratios: If I have 8200rpm redline and a 3.71:1 diff Id be hitting 102kmhr in 1st gear!!

The figures above are with a 4.11 ratio diff, which leaves me some nice torque for the other gears. Although I'll probably end up running a 4.3:1 diff, as even with that my gearing will be capable of 200mph (320kmhr) in 5th gear. I plan on running a redline of no more than 8,000rpm, probably a fair bit less until I upgrade cams/springs.

With a 3.7:1 diff my theoretical top speed in 6th gear at 8,000rpm is.....530kmhr. Considering my realistic top speed will be closer to 300kmhr, its pretty clear that Im wasting alot of torque with such a tall diff ratio. :p

Ive attached a little spread sheet I use to play with the numbers. Ive got it setup for my T56 but you can chuck some R154 ratios in there to compare if you like.

Anyone know if the 4.3:1 diffs were available with a factory LSD centre? Ive got a 3.7 and a 4.11 diff but a bloke I know (Justen with the GT4 mentioned above) is offering to swap me his 4.3 for my 3.7, I know the 3.7 is an LSD centre and he thinks his is too....but I didnt think the 4.3s even came out as an LSD?

Hahaha, just stirring IJ ;)

These boxs have a notoriously shit shifter which seems to be a major factor in some people liking them or not, very tricky to shift 2nd - 3rd nicely, apparently a rip-shifter fixes that though. Ive driven some T56 equiped HSVs before and didnt really have a problem but I wasnt slamming through the gears as quickly as I will want to do in my own car.

As said, time will tell. A fair few people are doing some impressive things with a T56 but perhaps its one of those luck of the draw deals.

On a lighter note, my wheels just turned up!! Couldnt get the boxes open with my keys (mate packaged them using some industrial strength tape) so Im gonna duck home at lunch time and check them out.

Been waiting for them for nearly 2 months so Im mega excited at the moment!! :D

Heres the tyres I picked up for the rear, they were cheap and will be fine to get things moving. Will replace with some RSRs when they wear out.
