I'm curious and the major differences(other than obvious) their is between aluminium and carbon fiber driveshafts. I'm assuming the the aluminium has much more flex to it making it worse for drag racing. Is the carbon fiber brittle?

Any info please let me know, and what you have used. Thanks guys.

CF driveshaft failure = broom under the car and little if any damage

Any other driveshaft failure = damage

Lol ok, thats a plus.

Can they take 500lb/ft? Can a aluminuim one take that? Will a stray rock FUBAR a carbon fiber DS? Basically I'm going from a W58 to a R154 and I'm not considering stock parts. Hoping to make around 400ish this year and 500 next spring when the turbo/injectors/computer get changed, so its either a steel/aluminuim/CF. I'm sure the steel one is the tops for strength and such, but its heavier. Car will be tracked(1/4, and road raced) this summer mainly, bit of daily driven.

4.30's LSD, IIRC about 3550-3600lbs with me.

Steel is still lighter than stock so its still an upgrade. My vote would be either cf or steel. Would not be happy to have an alum ds rip my car apart on a hard launch.

So I'm guessing your already turbo? I've been having some trouble deciding whether I should save up some money for a complete 7mgte swap (with r154) or keep my w58 which now has a broken clutch as of 2 weeks ago. Should I replace the clutch or buy an r 154 tranny w/ one piece driveshaft and it should bolt right up to the 7mge correct?

(not trying to hijack your thread) :1zhelp:

Yah I was just begining to think the same thing. Just curious what are the limits of each driveshaft type.

Someone must have used them, come on people.

Toink: Turbo W58, clutch was slipping, and HG was "leaking" very slow haha. Going all out with a GTE R154.

If you go with any 1 piece drive shaft you need to install some hoops to keep it under control in an event of it breaking. A 2 piece will be the smoothest with a new center bearing and is the safest for top speed running. If you're just planning on drag racing with it, I would go with steel.

Yah there is no way I'm paying for stock parts. High speed runs aren't really my thing, 200km/hr is plenty, and about all I can get with 4.30's anyways.

Might want to start your own thread;)

Well...Once again...I've drop a few bucks on the Poopra...

I'll let you know with a update to this thread how the carbon fiber drive shaft is doing:) I was told by the vendor that they haven't broke one yet on a 800hp MKIII:):):)

Doesn't matter, the lower gear ratio in the back means MORE driveshaft speed getting to critical speed sooner.

Ahhh touche, a engine and tranny limit the max speed of the DS. Either way I will spread some light on this topic since no one has chimed in on a CF driveshaft. If it does break I can also picture a "broom" like effect.

i have a quick question, since my trans(r154) and engine is still out maybe it would be wise to replace that center bearing on my driveshaft

would this be the only part i would be looking at? #37230 in that center picture #37120?

if you have no vibration your fine but unless you want to spend 200+ on a carrier bearing go for it. to unbolt the ds and bolt in a new carrier bearing and re bolt in the ds it takes no more than 30 min. you just need to get a Toyota carrier bearing which is 200+$.

So, was there ever a report on Shaftmaster's 2-Piece DS? Did Suprahero report back?

I went to Shaftmaster's website; but, it only shows the Aluminum 1 Piecers...

OK, I'm doing this right now... I'm getting the carrier bearing from Autozone and taking it to my friend to weld on a tab to match the stock one... but I'm also going to be getting a 1 Piece steel ds aswell! I love to drag race and thats why the steel ds.. I'm installing some loops and getting my stock one fixed just to try it out... I'm getting my turbo rebuilt next week then going to redyno.. I just made 427rwhp at 19psi when I go to the track I'll be at 25psi with race gas hoping to top 500rwhp! I know I can! I'll report back with my impressions... I've talked with lots of people and steel is the way to go for Drag racing... If you're going to be doing lots of highway pulls above 140 then get the carrier bearing replaced... I have a friend that bought the autozone one and its been great for over a year with no issues and 10k+miles and several pulls!
