Differential Question

Does anybody know what is on the other side of these bolts? I ask because I got the bolt almost all the way out ( the one on the passenger side in particular) and now I can feel whatever it is on the other side thats holding it spinning. Any suggestions on how to get this out are badly needed.

I vaguely remember that happening to me before, I think it was the same bolt. IIRC, the nut the bolt screws into is spot welded in place and had broken loose. If that's what I'm thinking of we had to cut the bolt. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I dont know if its the same on all MKIII, but its a square nut inside a metal cap that the cap is welded to the subframe and prevents the nut from spinning on my car which is a 1990.

That's what I'm thinking...

Alex - Is this your car you're pulling the diff from or a donor? If it's a donor you could try cutting the bolt, cutting the surrounding metal so you can get to the nut, or drilling a hole and hope that you can pack the area around the nut with enough JB Weld to hold the nut in place while you get the bolt out.

It's my car. I think I'm gonna cut a section out and weld in 1/8" sheet metal with new hardware. I'm glad I'm not the only one this happened to though. Thanks.

i think this happened to drjonez a long time ago as well. it'll probably happen to me, too, as everything is rusted tight on my car. :(

What did you replace it with?

The car that happened to me on was a parts car. I didn't have to worry about that. I can't recall is if there was a way to access it once the diff. was out.
