If you're converting from R12 to R134a, there's a few things you should do if you want it done completely correctly.

1. Evacuate the system completely.
2. Replace all the o-rings in the system with R134a compatible ones.
3. Replace the receiver/drier.
4. Add adapter fittings for R134a.
5. Use the correct oil and fill with R134a.

Anything other than that may work, but probably not quite as well, and not for as long, so don't skimp. IMO.
