Long story short, I injured my back about 3 years ago, went through a battle of Hell with Worker's Comp, and gained damn near 50 lbs in the process.

Finally started hitting the gym this last semester (just doing some basic cardio) when I found out my college actually offers the opportunity to work out with a personal trainer.

I signed up, and started a pretty heavy duty (imo) workout routine last Tuesday. Spent 2 hours of resistance training (shoulders/chest) and cardio. Felt freaking AWESOME when I finished.

Wednesday, my arms are sore, my chest is sore. Still, it's not too shabby. Thursday, my triceps were fucking DEAD! I was struggling just to get my shirt on! Found out about this DOMS thing, Delayed Onset of Muscle Soreness.

Thursday evening, I go back in to the gym - we do an hour and a half of back/leg work, and more cardio.

Unfortunately, I was a total dumbass on one particular item - I had just finished hamstring pulls (15 reps @ 50lbs) and felt a good burn from that - last set, we're going to do calf presses. The trainer says 'Let's find a good weight for you on this, you want to work for the last couple of reps - just like any other press I'm doing. What started out as 15 reps @ 65lbs, I ended up pretty much 'showing off' and doing 75 reps @ 100lbs. Alright, I got that good burn feeling!

HOLY SHIT AM I FEELING IT THIS MORNING! Yesterday I didn't feel hardly anything, but daaaaamn is it here with me this morning.

So yeah, this must be what they mean by no pain, no gain! Whole reason for posting this (other than entertainment) is I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for easing some of this muscle pain?

Easing the pain? Don't go balls to the wall when you're first starting out...results take time, they don't happen overnight. I'm surprised your trainer didn't point this out... :-\

Well, no, he did point that out. He actually stopped me at 75 - I was wanting to go for an even 100 :D

Ask people at the gym or trainer .....when you in a month in or more theere is a mix or some sort that you mix with gatorade. The mix just gives you more electrolytes etc, makes you feel that you didn't even go to the gym yesterday.

Just ask what people drink around you.

Other than that just deal with being sore. the more sore you are means your gaining more muscle, that the way i think of it.

Make sure you drink plenty of water before and after your workouts, and before bed especially. Taking supplements with amino acids and also a low fat/low carb protein shake [I use Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Gold Standard] can also help you out. It is only 130 calories, with very little of that coming from fat, and gives you 24g of protein per serving. I recommend mixing it with water rather than milk, because it seems that you want to lose weight and build lean mass, and adding milk is just going to add fat [but is supposed to taste better]. The protein along with amino acids and proper hydration should help muscle building and regeneration, and I noticed that it helped me with soreness. It's no anesthetic, but it sure helped me. A long time ago I used something called "Recovery Fuel", and I remember that it helped me as well, but it's been years. It was probably just a big amino acid blend.
If you don't like the idea of buying supplements, just make sure you are eating healthy, but also eating enough.

Hit up an herbal store and pick up some lecithin capsules. The body uses it to repair damage done to ligaments & tendons, it'll cut healing time enough to make it worthwhile. Picked up this tip from a professional dancer way back, now I use it to recover from nasty mountain bike rides.

That's one of the amino acids that I use.
