Im planning on buying a Rod Knockin MK3 this weekend, and i have to plan out my build due to my financial situation. I have like $3,000... and this will be the 4 or 5 motor i've built now. Think of it like a budget built motor.

Most of this i'll be buying from either 935, jscspeed, and a OEM dealer partsdinosaur. Im still looking for an Oil Pump, and maybe a few other things... if i have enough cash i think i'll send the stock turbo to aaron for his special touch, i dont plan on porting and polishing the head this time, maybe next build. After all of this i figure i'll continue the mods... but just wanna get the engine built first.

silly 2jz kids... that'll cost more than 3,000...

and ARP are standard on Eagle Rods...

- Oil pump (shim relief valve ~5mm)
- Oil pump shaft bearing
- Oil squirter bolts (6)
- HG locator pins (2)
- Timing belt tensioning spring...replace the pulley if the bearings are bad.
- Toyota freeze plugs
- NA oil filter stud if you're planning on going to a thermostat controlled oil cooler circuit (and dump the pressure based stock oil filter head).

If you're getting a Toyota complete gasket kit and Gates timing belt, you should not need the timing belt kit from 935.

Get the crank turned, indexed, balanced, journals polished...have the Eagle rods sized to YOUR journal specs. Consider having the main caps line honed.

When you have the block bored (.020" over is what I'd do), the front timing plate should be installed to get the top surface even with the block deck. Use a torque plate and make sure the timing belt tensioning pulley is installed/torqued to spec. Same for the main crank caps. All these puts the torque stress on the block that exist when it runs and will give you the most accurate piston/wall clearances.

1.2mm gasket without even knowing how much the head/deck need to be cut?

Order the head gasket AFTER the other machine work is done.

Doward - I know, i was just trying to get a price in there for the spreadsheet i was making, and if its all stock i shouldnt have to shave off anymore than that, i hope!

NA Oil Filter stud - negative, i'm going to leave the stock lines and setup as it is... im sure if toyota set it up that way it should be fine, is it the BEST. No, but i'm happy with more cooling then less.

Will the complete gasket set come with a timing belt tensioner bearing?? In the pictures it doesnt show one... which is why i was thinking of the 935kit, as there kit is cheaper than just getting the bearing by its self...

Crank work will all be done - hopefully only .20 or .25... i dont remember what the clevites come in. I was going to have the machine shop check out the eagles per what i've learned here... I know all about the timing plate, torque plate, and all that. i was thinking of the main caps line honed too. depends on the price and how bad they are.

I want this motor to last, so i would much rather do it right the first time.

Question for the both of you.

Is the timing belt tensioner the same for the turbo and non-turbo?

And what are "intermediate shaft seals"..... cam seals? haha

You'll have to get the oil shaft bearing and squirter bolts at Toyota. Old squirter bolts become very inconsistent on the pressures they actuate at...it should be ~40 psi...you can reuse the nozzles, but clean them out good.

The timing belt tensioner should be the same for NA & Turbo...the Toyota gasket set does not include it. I would get one from Toyota (if you need it)...much too important to trust to an after market one. As long as it doesn't sound like an old roller skate when you spin it and it doesn't wobble, use the one you have. You want to get a new spring regardless.

The stock cooler circuit is not very efficient at keeping the oil at ops temp...the valve in the stock filter head directing oil to the cooler functions at 40 psi and then sends the oil straight to the pan after the cooler. Below that pressure, oil is not flowing to the cooler and when it does (above 40 psi), you're essentially bleeding pressure from the system. The stock system works, but does not hold a candle to a full flow thermostat controlled system. Upgrading it to a full flow is one of the best things you can do to keep the motor happy oil wise (and make it last). Read this:

Those are cam seals...the Toyota gasket kit includes them. The complete gasket kit is about $325 at Jay Marks Toyota...you can sell the stock HG pretty easy

i'll go to toyota today, and let them know what i want, and see what they say.

I really dont have money to drop on a full flow cooler circuit... thats the reason why i cant get one... later though i will.

full gasket set from pardsdinosaur is under $100. and i've rebuilt 3 engines with his kits, so im gonna get that.
