hey guys, i'm kinda jumping in the middle of this conversation, but it sounds like where i need to be. i haven't been on this site for a while and was hoping i could get some direction on my problem. after the infamous blown head gasket issue & repair, the engine has what i thought was rod knock. the mechanic removed the oil pan and No. 6 bearing from the bottom of the piston. it was trashed. he said i may need a new crankshaft & bearings. i'm searching the web, but don't know where to look. after reading the forums above, it sounds like i may need to just see how "bad" it is from a machinst first. If i do need one, where do you guys suggest?? i'm not fond of cheap autozone cranks either. lol thanks. BTW- i think someone earlier was asking about 7m crank weight---i found on-line, 56 lbs.
Comp Cams part number 975. It's actually the inner valve spring from a big block Chevy dual spring kit.
55 lbs seat pressure, 127 lbs open pressure as measured by Jim J. Eric V. confirms seat load of approx. 60 lbs.
Stockers measure around 35 lbs seat pressure.
I don't know where I got that, but it seems right. I'm using these in my n/a with Crower cams(head's done; gotta finish the bottom end). Iirc, there's quite a few people around here using these springs with good results. Also, there is a much better comparison around here if you search.

i know that. iam not buying valve springs idk why the valve springs were even brought up. iam just wanting some opinions on my crank it got effed up when i spun my #5 rod berring and i was asking weather or not it would be cheaper to buy a new one and if so if there were any lightwieght ones for sale, or if anyone knew of any good machine shops that would machine it. so thanks for all the comments and opinions i think i know what i have to do now.
ok guys, well, it appears from the mechanic i will a new crankshaft, 7M , i believe, it's an 89 NA. i've sen the posts for finding cranks @ Advance Auto and other similiar auto parts stores. Has anyone had to purchase a replacement crank and where did you go and were you pleased with the product? I'm in florida. thanks for your help.
I purchased a 5M remanned crank from Advance a couple years ago, and it did well. It came with matched bearings. Some people have said that their clearances are "all over the place" so I would suggest plastigauging the crankshaft before completely installing and tossing it back in the car.

#9627B (crank and main, rod bearings, and thrust washers - they will supply Clevite or ACL) = $225.00 with a $30 core charge for both. He seemed like a real cool guy and they did have both castings in stock at that time. Shipping was about $20 FedEx Ground.

well, turns out my mechanic had some connections through Advance Auto and i was able to get a crank pretty cheap. no worries, he knows to plastigage everything. Side note---i tried researching which crank is in my car before we pulled it, so i could get a jump start on ordering parts. i've read everything i can find saying there's a 6M and 7M crank. There was some confusion in my research stating that 89 NAs had 7M cranks. Well, pulled the oil pan, spun the crank and on it is stamped 6M. and i compared to pics i found on these forums. so i hope that helps someone else.
