Okay so i have been having a problem recently with my cooling system, it started off with a running water sound from the dash so i filled and bled the cooling system and got a new radiator cap from Toyota. Then the noise came back and so i decide to re-torque the head gasket as it may have been pushing pressure into the system causing the water to fill the overflow bottle WAY above the max level to the point where it goes out the little suicide hose. I removed a little water from the radiator and started the car doesnt seem like pressure is pumping out of the radiator cap fitting so im assuming that no pressure is going into the system so no hg leak? but today as i was driving the temp started going towards the H mark slowly maybe within a miles worth of driving, i parked in the mall parking garage and noticed my overflow bottle was full and about to overflow out of the little hose again, so i waited and let the car cool and poured the water back into the radiator and the level is back to normal again, idk what is causing this and is really confusing to me, anyone give me ideas on what could make the coolant get into the overflow tank to make it that full, oh and i also noticed the cooling system does not suck the water back from the overflow into the radiator, it just sits there... help please? thanks :icon_bigg

With a cold engine, squeeze the upper rad hose. No coolant should squirt into the overflow bottle if the cap is good and the hose should feel firm and springy.

If your rad cap is good, I would say its a BHG. Do a block test, or oil analysis to confirm.

well i did keep removing the cap to add coolant, and no it does not squirt into the overflow bottle that easily, the problem is that the upper hose never feels firm and springy, it feels like theres air pockets with the water and i can squeeze the hose to the point that the two ends meet. could it be a pinhole radiator leak causing it, as i do recall noticing a small bit of wetness at the top right corner frequently, i dont notice it anymore though...

Compression test.

Now.

And leak down.

Air is getting in the system from somewhere, If you flushed it and it came back and now your overheating, Its time to do those tests i just mentioned.

seems too easy to be true, but it was my radiator cap that was bad, it turned out that it was letting out coolant into the overflow but it loses pressure to send it back into the radiator so it stays in there, until i got a SANKEI(?) radiator cap and got new coolant in there, put coolant in the overflow about halfway between low and full, drove it around, the next day the water in the bottle was almost empty! im glad it sucks it back in now :D problem fixed
