Cold start issue

I installed a complete turbo back exhaust system Friday. Now, i'm having cold start issues. It keeps throwing engine code 21, which is for the O2 sensor. The exhaust is a BIC DDP, test pipe, and RSR GTII cat-back.

It turns over, but it's as if there is no fire or fuel. Last time i cleared the codes, unplugged and replugged the O2 sensor, tried to start it...it cranked. When it cranked, it seemed to stubble into life. Oh, the O2 sensor has less than 20k on it.

Yes, i used the search function. Not being able to enter "is" and "21" or anything under four letters is a pain, but I understand the reasoning behind it.

Any suggestions.

Have you checked the o2 sensor? It *could* have died. There is a procedure for checking it in the TSRM.

Also check the wiring for cracks / shorts.

Did you take out anything else when replacing the exhaust?

I did not. I may have forgotten to mention, but once the car is warm, the code goes away.

Sounds like the heater element in the sensor is toast, and once your exhaust warms it up far enough, it's ok.

Run through that method for checking the sensor from the TSRM - pay specific attention to the last step, the resistance of the heater circuit.

Don't get discouraged about the car, it's not tempermental. Twenty year old oxygen sensors don't like to be banged around. Turn this experience into a positive one in that you learned to be more gentle and loving when fondling your old girls electrical components.

P.S. If at all possible avoid using a universal oxygen sensor when chosing your replacement. Use either a toyota or denso replacement.

The O2 sensor is new, but it may have gotten dropped, kicked, or any other manner of destruction while i wasn't paying attention.
