Clutch pedal shenanigans...

In addition to my other problem, the clutch engages only just off the floor, like 1cm travel. Spongy feel to it.

I can have a look in the daylight (its 2:51am right now, and pitch black), is that low fluid, or air in the system?

if the fluid is that low to where it's causing a spongey feeling, it most likely has air in the system and needs to be bled.

check the carpet area around the pedal and make sure it's not wet from the fluid

If its not either of those its likely that your master is on its way out...

Checked the carpet and theres no fluid, none residing under the car. It looks like the reservoir is just empty - not completely empty, theres just not much in it. I'll get that topped up - should be okay then.

Go under the dash and look up see if there is any moist areas on the master cylinder. Honestly i would say just buy a new master cylinder and slave cylinder you might be able to get both for $100 and call it day.... Dont just change one b/c u will be more than likely changing the other pretty soon after

Checked - and theres no leaks at all. Low fluid definitely, although the piston might have become stuck. Refilling the master cylinder and pumping it had some effect, and there are no leaks anywhere that i can see, no puddles or drips of fluid anywhere.

Well its a very simple solution ..... a leak is some where there are 3 possible places. Get someone to pump the clutch pedal and you will see whats going on

Check:
1) Master Cylinder
2) Slave Cylinder
3) The lines (metal and the rubber one)

You can get all 3 new for around 200 bucks. But my bet its either number 1 or 2 and or both. Good luck

Just a note, you don't actually have to pump the pedal to find a leak... all you have to do is hold it down.

Well - i can see no leak from the master cylinder OR the slave cylinder. cant feel any wetness from either end. May just need a bleed now - the fluid wasnt too hot when i picked it up - should have changed it straight off.

Tru but when the pedal is being pumped you can view the movement of the slave cylinder. Its always easier to have another person when dealing with hydrolics

Fill up your fluid and bleed it. If you have low fluid again, I'm pretty sure you have a leak.

As far as the clutch engagement point... If bleeding the system doesn't solve that issue, there is an adjustment point where the rod from the master cylinder comes through the firewall and connects to the clutch pedal. I had to play around with that for a few days before i got the right feel. The only thing you have to remove is a pin and the bolt it goes through... You turn that rod so that it pushes harder on the pedal towards the driver seat.

i had the same thing happen to my 88 turbo. i couldn't see any leaks either. i replaced both the master and slave cylinder and now, it works fine.

$100 dollars? You can buy a rebuild kit for like $7 IIRC.

easier to buy than to rebuild its a trade off man .... effort vs dollars. I took the path of $100 for new parts with a warranty and no regrets
