I come from a land down under
A friend bought a 7" touchscreen PC around the other night.

It has a 500mhz cpu and a solid state HDD/ramdrive and comes loaded with Win XP!

Thought it would be a bit of a gimmack at first but it's really good, I'm getting one to access the Wolf instead of using a Laptop!

Still pricing things, so far the only thing i got is the lillyput 8" touchscreen monitor, got it on ebay for $250
The 8"? I don't think that will fit in the dash... Are you mounting it somewhere else? If you pull the case off, measure the inside and let me know how big the bare electronics are!

cool, GL with the carputer! if you need any help, feel free to msg me...I've done it before =)

First thing tho, @500mhz you may not have enough CPU speed to do what you think you can. DVDs will be out of the question unless the board comes with a hardware mpeg decoder. What board/cpu are you looking at?

233mgz PC, DVD drive AKA media PC....runs DVDs flawlessly. Don't know where you get your info from. DVD runs from DVD drive not massive load on CPU, all it has to do is keep the media player running, thats about it.

O and on this whole car PC thing, I've got 90% of it together, only thing Im missing is a solid state drive, thinking about getting a 8 gig thumb drive, have it boot windows XP from it.
GO GO CarPC.

First off, when it comes to computers...I know a few things ;)

Your 233MHz home PC is vastly different from a low power/heat integrated system. For example, your PII (I'm guessing) would most likely have a video card that supports hardware decoding of DVDs. I'm fairly certain that at around that clock speed you cannot play a DVD without some sort of hardware assistance.

Speaking from *actual* experience here, I made myself a carpc that ran off of a 500MHz C3 processor. I used the VIA EPIA 500MHz board w/ 128MB of ram, 40GB laptop drive, Wireless, LCD interface, Linux and a metric ass ton of custom coding...This processor is too slow to play DVDs, hence the reason why I brought up that point.

Also, the DVD is read from the drive yes...but it needs to be decoded which is quite CPU intensive (not for current PCs no)...hence the reason why your 450MHz palm pilot can't play DVDs :)

Remember, MHZ != performance.
