Can a Oil Cooler be too big?

I remember Supragirl having a similar question, but no objective response. I have a Tru-Cool S 13" tall X 11" wide X 1 1/2 - 48 Row Oil Cooler. Is this too large of a cooler?

I'm paranoid that it might cool to the point where the cooler might be "overworking" the thermostat, constantly opening and closing it.

Might it cause a pressure drop?

Is anyone running one similar to this size with no ill affects?

Cheers,

Matt-

No...don't over think this too much...you've covered yourself nicely by going with a thermostat controlled system ;)

1) How can you over work a thermostat for what it's designed to do. That's like saying you "over work" your coolant thermostat every time you run the car ;)
2) The will be no significant drop in pressure...the tubing that runs back and forth through the cooler is the same diameter.
3) I'd rather have a cooler too large than too small...under thermostat control, it will have the thermal capacity to keep the oil right at or slightly below 100 deg C. That temp is perfect.

They work good and have an internal thermostat. The only problem is where to mount it and get good air flow. On a pre'89, the grill goes all the way across the top of the bumper...mounting on top of the IC is a good place, but will require mod'ing the hood latch support bracket.

On an '89+, the center section above the bumper blocks air flow...you could use small 12V fans and rig to run off a 160-180 deg switch though.

oh ok, i am interested in the RX7 cooler and i was wondering the same thing for cooling but will come up with a way. I may install it behind the IC and see hwo that works. If it doesn't work well mount it in front of the IC or get a turbo A duct and put it behind the bumper support

The fittings are odd ball iirc on the RX7 cooler...finding a pair of fittings could be a challenge...you may have to re-tap for NPT. Adjuster is running a RX7 cooler, you could ask him.
