Pretty much had the worst time with them today.

Basically here is the story. I've been running onboard audio on my motherboard for awhile now. But I wanted to upgrade my sound system for the computer so I bought a cheap 7.1 sound card at Best Buy today. Its a "Rocketfish" brand, but whatever it was cheap and was what I was looking for.

So I get home, physical installation is easy enough, took all of 2 minutes. Then the fun part starts. I fire up my computer and pop in the CD that came with the card. It starts on the driver installation well enough, then starts prompting me for a file "P17.sys". So I do a quick search on the CD for the file. Its not on the CD, but thats where the installer is looking for it. So I thought that was a little odd, but I had a backup plan anyway.

So I go on the Rocketfish website and download the latest drivers for the sound card. I install those and restart my computer like it asks, no problem. I start my computer back up and look in the hardware manager, next to my new sound card it has that little yellow indicator for "no drivers installed". So I uninstall the drivers, reinstall, restart. Same thing.

So I give rocketfish tech support a call. They really have no idea whats going on and transfer me to geek squad. So I go through all the transfers at geek squad (3) till they get me to the right department and realize that I'm not asking for help with a computer I bought from them. So after talking with the lady for a few minutes and getting nowhere she says "Uh...well...*click*" and hangs up on me.

So at this point I'm furious and call back customer support with all the pleasantries aside. Finnally I get back to the department I'm supposed to be talking to and the guys says basically that if I wanted help, I would have to pay them $139.99 to come out to my house and take a look. Mind you this sound card cost $24.99. I kindly told him that I would rather smash my sound card in my driveway than do that.

So thats my experience with the "Geek Squad" today, and my sound card still doesn't work.

What OS is the driver CD for? What OS are you running?

Did you try the same method, but backwards? Sometimes, devices require you to install the drivers first. This way, when you install the hardware windows has the drivers on hand and can install the software like normal.

Also, don't rule out the fact that you might have a DOA sound card on your hands..

Why do you want to upgrade from your motherboard audio? These days you have to get into the mid to high end sound cards before you start getting better than the integrated audio. Unless your motherboard is ancient, then it's understandable. Realistically upgrading your speakers will provide a more noticeable experience for the money. If your set on getting the sound card to work, tell us what motherboard you have and what OS your running.

Well my motherboard audio wouldn't do 7.1, but this card will. Thats why I got it. Either way, my Motherboard is an Asus A8N-SLI and I'm running XP sp3.

Ok makes sence. I can help you get it working but it will probably be an exercise in patience. First a couple of questions.

1. Since you didn't mention 64-bit I assume you are running Windows XP 32-bit edition, correct

2. Is this the card you bought?
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Rocketf...Card/9180414.p?id=1218047305021&skuId=9180414

3. Do you have another computer that you can log on with? After reading reviews on the card it seems the drives are very unstable and can cause the computer to blue screen during the install. Hopefully we can avoid it happening to you but I would still need to be able to talk to you if it does happen.

Goddamn, for the price of the card plus money for them to come fix everything, you could have one of the mid to higher end sound cards from Creative Labs.

Fuck.
That.

As-is, I'm using onboard Realtek in 5.1. [I don't really have the room in my case for expansion, unless I go USB and mount it internally].

If you NEED 7.1 [and it doesn't come standard on your mobo], you can go cheap, but unfortunately I think you went a little TOO cheap. I'd rather be stuck in 5.1 land with more cash in pocket.

Yeah I brought it back yesterday, fortunately they gave me a refund for it and taught me that best buy is not the place for computer hardware.
