Easiest way to release the keepers form the retainers is to hit the head of the retainer with an extension and a 11MM socket.
Hammer the head of the extension with a good wack and the socket in the center covering both keepers.... This will make sure the keepers stay inside the socket and are not lost. Also takes about 10 seconds to release the springs... If you are taking them off

SIP racing sells the shim in smaller sizes than toyota. Be sure to allow for a long time for making them and shipping. When i shimmed my head it took me about 2 weeks to recieve some shimes to check the clearances.I had to get smaller shims because the vavale were ground. Then about 2 more weeks to recieve the shims to finish the job. Best sounding head I have ever had in my car. This is motor number 6
Also good to get shim less buckets like out of the mr2 and echo so you dont spit a shim with a cam and rpm.
