I have used this formula at work as well as at home so I made up an excel spreadsheet to do the work for you- this can work for any engine, just plug in the desired clearances and your measurements!

getting this right would eliminate the ticking at idle?

If the ticking is caused by excessive valve clearance, then yes. Lots of things an cause a tick in the engine (injectors, piston slap, rod bearing clearance, valve clearance, oil pump driveshaft thrust play, etc). Finding which one it is is the tough part.

It says another motor for the shims in the writeup^. Ford Zetec
