i have not done it yet but took my 89 Supra to a local shop for an estimate on a new set of rims+tires. the guy there was familiar with my car & suggested i put 17" rims on the front & 18" rims on the back and insists it'd be great & work out well.

the 18" wheels were going to be Konig Reasons 18X7.55-100/11445GRM
and the tires were going to be Kumho Ecsta AST 225/50R-16 92H BSW

None of your fucking business
I have 18x9 +39 offset in front and 18x10 +44 offset in rear. On coilovers. Rubbed the inner fender liner once. Tires are 245/40 f, and 275/35 rear. I'm lowered but not on stock suspension so there could be some interference, I don't know.

JoeyD:

Your tires won't fit on your rims, you need an 18" tire for an 18" rim! Also don't put 17" in front and 18" in the rear, the mkiii is so front heavy already you will be shifting the front to rear center of gravity even further forward, not good for handling, unless you want to look like an 80's Camaro.

Gelboy:

When you look for tires try to find something that has close to the same overall diameter as the stock size 225/50/16 are around 24.7"-25.1"
The 225/50/18 is around 26.9-27.2" it will look like a SUV tire in the Supra's wheel well. If you wanted to stay with the same width as stock (although I don't know why if you are buying all new wheels and tires), you would want something like a 225/40/18 (overall dia. 25.1").

You could up size the rims width if you haven't bought anything yet to 8.5-9" wide in the front and 9-10 wide in the rear with the correct offset these fit just fine (10's may need the fender rolled). Then run 245-255 in the front and 265-285 in the rear.

If you already own the 7.5" wide rims then a 235-245 wide tire is about all you can fit on there. I've put 245/45/16 on the stock sawblades, but it was bubble walls galore, didn't look good at all.

Having said all of this, you need to read, read, read. There a bunch of very informative threads on how to choose wheels and tires on this forum, SF, mkiiitech, and many other forums out there.

arn't 18's common on the mk3? I'm going to be putting some 18x8.5 and 18x9.5 on in a month or so (i'm going to order them tomorrow :-D )

I sure hope they don't rub, damn!

OH MY DEAR LORD! I can't believe some of the stuff I read on here sometimes.

You want to keep the same overall diameter for your wheel/tire combo when upgrading. That way your speedo doesn't get off too much.

Our stock combination (225/50/16) has a diameter of 24.9" That means that you want to try and hit that magic # as closely as possible with your new setup.

Say you go with a 17" rim. If you want a 255 for the width then you should go with a sidewall height to be close - speedo will be off by .4 mph when the speedo reads 60.

For an 18" rim you will want to drop the sidewall height down to 35 to match the same diameter as the 17" combo.

Do some research - http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

I think the question you really want to ask here is what offset will fit. http://www.1010tires.com/WheelOffsetCalculator.asp

You could go with a 20" rim and a 255/25/20 tire and it would fit just like the MkIV rims - as long as the offset is correct - overall diameter of this combo would be 25" (.1" larger than the stock size).

It's all in the offset and width of the tire, along with your suspension. Did you have the car before you had the rims? If you just bought the rims cuz it was a good deal or they looked good, you really should have done some research to see if they will even work on your car... :3d_frown:
