Okay, so i am looking at buying an 89 turbo targa 5speed that has a BHG.Its deffiantely a BHG thats the problem (overheated, losing coolant, white smoke from exhaust,etc..)but the car has been sitting for about 5 months since the BHG. When it blew he had to drive the car like 10 miles back home. Anyways i wanted to hear it run before i commited to buying it to see if there was any rod knock. He cranked it up and idled it for a min and then revved a couple times to right at and maybe a little above 2500rpms. I heard no rod knock..Before i buy it should i crank it up again and rev it higher than 2500?

So, my question. Is there anyway that it blew the head gasket ONLY between a cyl. and a coolant passage and coolant did not get in the oil? I know if i get it im getting the head redone and installing a MHG and ARPs. Im sure once i fix the BHG and run it it will start knocking like 5miles down the road.Oh btw..this car/motor/tranny has 180,xxx miles on it. Any input is welcome.

Cliffs:Want to buy car with BHG, guy drove it 10 miles home, sat 5 months, no rod knock.

It's definitely possible that it will be fine after a new hea gasket is installed...just be sure to flush the oil out several times before driving it after you change the head gasket...

And usually rod knock is right around the 2500 range...if the oil/oil cap doesn't look milky, then you're probably alright.

The quickest check for a coolant into the oil would be to look for the chocolate milkshake on the dipstick and under the oil cap. Do a search on rod knock, because there's a ton of threads on it, but as I remember, it is common in the 2500 to 3000 rpm range.

My BHG was more of a weeping headgasket, and the leak was into cylinder #6. I didn't have any milkshake showing up, no knock after 1 1/2 years, and I did drive on the blown gasket for a couple of weeks before I got past the denial and fixed it.

Crap i cant believe i didnt look at the dipstick or oil cap. The guy was kinda in a hurry cause he had a client to deal with so i completely forgot. I'll do that when i go back there. And thats pretty cool that you never got rod knock.

You said it's been loosing coolant and burning white smoke, on top of letting it sit for 5 months with it like that... Yep. Get those bearings outa there and have the crank/rods resized for new bearings. That oil in the coolant has been chewing away at those bearings the entire time.

It'll just be a matter of time before it starts knocking, you might as well fix it now.
