Is there any particular reason that I shouldn't plumb my intake system using 3" mild steel tubing instead of aluminum? I have lots of 3" tubing at the shop, its easy to weld and I can get it powder coated any color including aluminum.

weight, heat loss/retention, and corrosion on the inside of the tubing.

steel is heavier, but cheaper and easier to weld, it holds in more heat, and won't cool off as quickly. once your IC pipes get a nice coating of oil on the inside thanks to the PCV system, you probably won't have to worry about corrosion. lots of people run steel piping, and if you have some on hand, i say go for it

+1 with enraged. if you got it use it. but as its heaveier you may have to add some brackets to help hold the pipes, rather than relying on just the clams and couplers.

I Would go with what you have on hand, you could always use it as a template for alumunium one down the road.

To avoid the corosion issue I went with aluminized exhaust tubing.
