The first one is probably better than the second if you're looking for "first hand" stuff, but the second is the official site. You can see what's going on in the AF today.

I've said this a few times, haha I'm not bragging or anything, just happy about it. But this time next year I'll be commissioning into the AF and I couldn't be happier. A guaranteed job, travel, and a "company" that will take care of you like no other. Definitely look at your options though and DO NOT accept everything a recruiter tells at face value if you decide to go talk to one. Ask questions and make sure you two are on the same page about EVERYTHING. There are a bunch of people on this site that will probably give you some info on the enlisting route.

If you decide to go the officer route I can tell you about some of the experience I've had with that trainning and I know there's at least one already commissioned officer (he might be out of the AF now, I'm not sure) on here too.

Anyways, good luck with your choice

i went to the Army place, and was going to the list of things, and i told him i wnated to be a mechanic, then he was like, Did you Look at Infantry? bla bla we can have you in the field in about a year with all your training etcetc, So the whole time, he just wanted Infantry, told me i could become a E3 before training was over. ROFL, you get another rank for bringing someone to sign up with you.

Army=Desperate.

That would be me ;)
15 years active duty...been in the reserves almost 9 years now. Derk, you're about to embark on some of the best years in your life. It's the people you meet and the job that makes it all worth while.

Weather Man - Regardless of enlisting or becoming a commissioned officer, the job you do in the USAF is important to the freedoms we enjoy here in the USA. It might not seem like it at times, but every person has an impact...the team work and camaraderie is something you don’t see in the corporate world. You will learn and see things most people never get a chance to see. I highly recommend it ;)

Best of luck to you.

Hehe, yep... you're exactly who I was talking about. I really can't wait, everyone I talk to has nothing but good things to say about AD. My dad talks about it and how great it was alllllllllllllllllllll the time and he's been out since '94, haha.

Two of my friends actually just commissioned last weekend... one's off to ENJPT and the other has casual in Pensacola and then he's off to wherever strike nav's go

But, watching them get their bars just makes me want mine more now! haha

Yeah, I miss AD myself...the life was hard at times, but I would not trade the experience for anything. And I really miss burning up the sky with a blow torch strapped on ;)

ENJJPT huh...must have done really well :bigthumb:
WSO in the "Mud Hen" is not too shabby either...that machine can put a MK84 right through your front door.

Your time will be here soon enough Derk...do well in your last year in ROTC. You want to be at the top of the heap when assignment time comes around. What are you looking at for an AFSC?

I can't even imagine how fun it must've been to fly and to fly jets at that! Maybe I'll get an incentive ride one day, hehe. Do you still fly in the Reserves?

Oh and the ENJPT guy was the DG of the current senior class, haha, soooo yeah, he was on the ball haha. My commander's rating is pretty high and I'm pretty sure I'm in the top 1/3... so hopefully that'll help out when job selection time comes up... which actually starts in January.

From what people in past classes have told me, since I contracted under engineering there are 3 AFSC's I HAVE to put on my dream sheet... but I really really really don't want to do engineering, hehe so those are going to be my last choices. But this is what I'm thinking my list is going to be as of now:

1) Space and Missiles ( I really want to get in on the space side)
2) Communications (combat comm seems kind of cool)
3) Logistics (maintenance seems cool)
4) Not sure on a 4th

Then the 3 I have to put down

i agree 100% with jdub. i did 6 years active duty as Security Forces (like MPs) and had a great time. it was hard at times, but the life long friends you will meet make it worth it. i say go for it, you will learn a valuable skill and get some structure in your life. good luck.

I've been in the Air Force now for a little over four years now. My experience has been okay. Something though I can't stress enough is to get a job that you will really like. Trust me, the military really sucks if you are doing something you dont really want to be doing. What job are you looking into for the Air Force?

Before you make your decision, do more research. Things have changed, and it's not the same as it was years ago. I re-enlisted in 2000 for 6 years because I loved my job and the Air Force. A little more than a year ago, I had "unshakeable" plans to stay in for over 20 years. I was in over 9 years, almost halfway to a retirement check every month at the age of 38. Here I am today, growing a beard. I could not stand the extra thankless hours [thankless by my superiors, not the US citizens - you guys are great in supporting the troops], the lack of drive and experience that some people get away with because others carry them, and I hated having my motives and methods questioned by those higher AND lower in rank and experience to me. Some things are absolutely ridiculous in the military and some things are wonderful. I was tired of getting mostly the former and less of the latter, that's all. Your experience may vary.
Some BS things I've seen:
Worked a 20 hour shift during an exercise. Not war - practice.
Worked 6am-6pm all week during an exercise, and was called in at 1am to sign an "important" piece of paper. Again, not real war - an exercise.
Had a subordinate cry to me that I don't trust them to do the right thing, and that I am always watching them. Then, when I left him to do his thing and he screwed up, he said I am the supervisor and should have been watching him.
This person didn't know their job and was a complete f_ckup at work who never got in trouble off-duty, but didn't know his job. He got a 5/5 on his annual performance report because he tries really hard, but we have other guys who know their job and don't get in trouble who still get 4/5 reports. I was tired of running my shop during the busiest shift and still being asked for more. One week we had one aircraft available to fly, it flew twice every day/night that week. That means my shift worked AND FIXED every discrepancy when the aircraft came down. If we had a problem left over, the next two shifts did NOTHING to fix it, and we worked it the next night. It was getting insane.
Here is an example of how messed up and disrespectful things are:
A girl from another flight in my section said something about getting an incentive flight. She's been in for 2 1/2 years and went on 2 already. The flight crew also gave her a really nice benchmade knife. I said that's messed up, I've been in over 9 and I've never had an incentive flight. She said that's because she's not a piece of sh_t. She got away with saying that because her supervisor, who is in her chain of command, insisted that he would handle it. I couldn't do anything about it. Meanwhile, if I would have said "No, it's because I don't have tits" [or even alluded to the fact that she received special favors because of her sex], I would be in major trouble with my chain of command, and would probably be investigated by the base Equal Opportunity office.
Many of these kids are just downright disrespectful, and they get away with it. When I was new, they were still doing "wall-to-wall counseling" where if you were a f_ckup, they threw you from wall to wall to whup your ass and straighten you out.
Let's not forget the incident where I was arrested on base for not wearing a bicycle helmet while riding - you can find that thread on this forum somewhere with a search.
If you want more information, PM me, or you might want to ask some other people who were in for awhile - Malloynx, outofstep, or pokey. There are good things, and I have dwelled upon the bad. I just left with a really bad taste in my mouth, and it's still not fully washed out.
If you join and are not an officer, and want a new BMW M3, you're in crappy debt. Good luck.
